POSITON PURPOSE
Under general supervision of the Director, the Charge Capture Specialist functions in the Cath Lab to manage all aspects of procedure scheduling and patient billing activities. The individual in the position is responsible for the coordination of the procedure suites, provider schedules, ensuring necessary supplies/equipment required for procedures are available. Collects data and prepares reports related to all functions within Cath Lab including but not limited to charge reconciliation, scheduling efficiencies, and procedure volumes. Responsible for ensuring all billing charges are captured in an accurate and appropriate manner; identifies, analyzes, and reconciles billing errors and omissions; as well as other miscellaneous clerical functions.

- Schedule Management: Collects and communicates data relevant to scheduled procedures.
- Capture charges, working through documentation, and ensuring that orders are accurate and ready for submittal. Assigns appropriate billing codes.
- Evaluates medical records, provider notes and dictation to determine appropriate procedure codes to assign to patient records and bills.
- Uses coding software and Charge Description Master (CDM) to create billings and charges for insurers, government agencies and other payors.
- Uses a standard listing of procedures/charge codes and/or an automated system with the company’s programmed Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) for all commonly used Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs).
- Performs audits to discover areas for corrections.
- Maintains a current knowledge of procedural terminology requirements and documentation requirements.
- Works with other point of service charging/coding staff to maintain consistency in practice.
- Maintenance of patient records, reports, and current patient Electronic Medical Record systems.
- Assists Cath Lab staff by reviewing and validating case record data for completeness and correctness.
- Adheres to infection prevention protocols.
- Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed consent and privacy.
- Demonstrates adaptability, problem solving and professional behavior at all times.
- Participates in continuous Quality Improvement programs.
- Actively participates in hospital and departmental group meetings.
- Actively participates in survey readiness activities and assures that department is compliant with all regulatory standards.
- Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
- Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS
All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members. Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: 1-3 years related experience required. Prior scheduling experience preferred.
License/Certification: None required.
Required Skills: Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of medical terminology, principles of surgical schedule management, excel spreadsheet & computer software applications for perioperative setting required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent: sitting.
Occasional: standing, walking, & reaching
Visual and hearing acuity required. Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.
Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
