Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Learns the basic skills necessary to become functional in the skills of a call taker. Since this is a position of learning, an employee in this class may not remain in this position beyond their first year of employment. The employee must progress to a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator II.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Work is performed under the general supervision of the 9-1-1 Communications Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Efficiently operates the computer systems, telephone systems, and radio equipment in a timely manner while working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.

  • Efficiently navigates the PEMA approved protocols in a timely manner by correctly determining the caller’s situation and its corresponding protocol and then communicating instructions to the caller and dispatching the incident in a fast- paced, multi-tasking environment.

  • Act decisively to accurately process requests for service and information in a timely manner in a fast-paced multi-task environment.

  • Employee will learn to compose and enter the information from the caller and radio into the correct format for entry in the computer aided dispatch system.

  • Responsible for entering the caller’s information received into the computer aided dispatch system and queuing the "call" to the appropriate 9-1-1 Telecommunicator.

OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Must present a proper appearance in accordance with LCWC Employee Handbook Section 4.4.

  • Receive and transmit messages through radio, telephone system, and computer that pertain to local, state, and federal public safety agencies.

  • Verifies and composes, computer entries, and hit confirmations in the computer system operated by the Pennsylvania state Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation, as required.

  • Responsible for being attentive in all forms of instruction including classroom instruction, direct supervision and on the job training.

  • Other duties designated by the 9-1-1 Communications Supervisor(s).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Project a positive image by being supportive and cooperative with LCWC staff, public safety agency personnel, public officials, news media, and the general public at all times.

  • Must be able to provide your own transportation to meetings, trainings, appointments and be able to access those locations with reasonable accommodations.

  • Participates in continuing educational activities and meetings outside of normal business hours, as required.

  • Employee must be able to adapt to an ever-changing, fast-paced, multi-tasking work environment, and must be able to talk out differences and express opinions with co-workers and management staff.

  • Maintains regular and predicable attendance in accordance with LCWC Employee Handbook Section 9.3.

  • Project a positive image when interacting with the general public and municipal, county, state, and federal officials and agencies.

  • Responsible for learning the operation of the telephone system and insuring that a call can be properly received, transferred, and traced.

  • The ability to exhibit strong teamwork while maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, general public and emergency service providers.

  • The ability to grasp instructions.

  • Sound knowledge of emergency service station identifiers, and their locations.

  • Sound knowledge of geographic locations within the county including fringe areas of bordering counties.

  • May be required to work outside of normal business hours to attend meetings or in an emergency situation.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES

  • Must successfully obtain the following certifications and re-certifications as needed; CLEAN, CPR, JNET, PEMA Approved Protocols, NCMEC, FEMA, IS-100 and 700, Basic Telecommunicator.
