Position Overview:
We are seeking a knowledgeable, solutions-driven Underwriting Scenario Desk Analyst to serve as a key resource for loan originators, processors, and underwriters at our growing mortgage company. This is a fast-paced, high-impact, consultative role that requires excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think creatively within regulatory limits in addition to strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex guidelines in simple terms.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of agency and investor guidelines (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo, and Non-QM) and can confidently collaborate with both production and operations staff to ensure consistency on guideline interpretations by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changing underwriting guidelines, mortgage regulations, and company policy.
Key Responsibilities:
• Serve as the primary point of contact for pre-underwriting scenario reviews and guideline interpretation
• Analyze and respond to loan scenario inquiries from loan officers, processors, and other team members, typically before submission to underwriting
• Review borrower profiles, income types, assets, credit, and property types to determine eligibility based on product guidelines and overlays
• Provide written responses and documentation references to support scenario recommendations
• Maintain a strong working knowledge of investor guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo, and Non-QM)
• Collaborate with underwriting, secondary, risk and compliance teams to ensure consistency in decisioning as it aligns to product and investor eligibility
• Track and document common scenario trends to support training and process improvement
• Assist with internal training and guideline updates as changes occur
Qualifications:
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, preferably in a scenario desk or underwriting support role (DE/LAPP/SAR a plus)
• Strong knowledge of agency and government loan programs (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA), and familiarity with Jumbo and Non-QM lending
• Solid understanding of AUS systems (DU, LP), TRID, income calculation, and documentation standards
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex guidelines in clear, actionable terms
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with tight deadlines
• Experience using LOS system Bytepro and scenario desk ticketing tools a plus
