Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.

We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 10.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.

Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.

The technician is a vital part of the physical security team on the WUSM campus and will plan and maintain the access control low-voltage systems, maintain the access control hardware, low-voltage wired components, and electronic equipment. They will also assist the locksmiths with cutting and issuing keys as needed.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Acts as primary low voltage technician for the physical security team, prioritizing work and making an initial assessment of conditions and service needs.
• Conducts maintenance on low-voltage security systems.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and completes repairs/installation of low-voltage electrical system card readers and stand-alone manual locks.
• Installs pathway for communications and low-voltage cabling.
• Installs, terminates, and tests Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic cabling.
• Cuts and issues new and replacement keys.
• Assists locksmith and technician teams as needed.
• Estimates labor time, requisitions materials needed, and requests assistance for long-range projects.
• Monitors service schedules/coordinates any interruptions in service (utility outages).
• Interfaces with customers to schedule/coordinate any interruptions in service (utility outages).
• Follows through on work in progress to verify proper facility conditions are restored.
• Keeps Physical Security supervisors aware of facility conditions, problems, and needs.
• Maintains effective communication with other stakeholders.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing more than 50 pounds and be able to raise and carry, with assistance, items weighing 100 pounds.
• Climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, and crouches to gain access to wiring and equipment.

Required Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
