About the role

Providence nurses are not simply valued – they’re invaluable. You will thrive in our culture of patient-focused, whole-person care built on understanding, commitment, and mutual respect. Join our team at Providence St Vincent Medical Center. As a Providence caregiver, you’ll apply your specialized training to deliver world-class health with human connection and make a difference every day through your extraordinary care.

The SSU is a unique place to work, bringing together nurses from various specialties who thrive in a fast-paced, controlled environment. We handle numerous patients daily, and while things can move quickly, the environment maintains a smooth flow, and we strive to ensure that the workload is manageable. Our team is well-supported, ensuring that nurses always have the assistance they need.

In our department, teamwork is essential. Nurses here are always ready to assist each other. Pre-operatively we are responsible for obtaining baseline vitals, preparing patients, administering medications, gathering health histories, and ensuring all safety checks are completed before surgery.  In pre-op, our nurses are assigned patients on a case-by-case basis, which allows them to assist a variety of patients coming in for elective surgery. This setup fosters more one-on-one interaction and personalized patient care, which our nurses find rewarding.

Post-operatively, we ensure meticulous monitoring of incision sites, drains, and wound changes. We assist patients with eating, ambulation, pain management, ensuring they can urinate, and any additional discharge requirements. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 for same-day discharge patients and 1:4 for overnight patients in post-op. This allows for more personal care and interaction, enabling nurses to focus on promoting healing and helping patients meet their post-surgery milestones.

If you’re seeking an engaging and collaborative work environment, this is the perfect place for you. Our team thrives on interesting cases and a supportive atmosphere, where every day brings new opportunities to learn and grow. We foster a fun and dynamic environment that encourages teamwork and camaraderie, making it a joy to come to work each day. Here, you’ll find the perfect balance of professional challenge and personal fulfillment, ensuring that you feel valued and motivated in your role.
