Role Summary

The Senior Consultant serves as the premier subject matter expert and technical mentor for the License Managed Services team. You will manage delivery for Avalara's largest enterprise customers, while building the technical capability of the team around them. Being a bar raiser, the Senior Consultant translates deep domain expertise into scalable frameworks, direct mentorship, and elevated departmental standards, ensuring the team grows in capability and accuracy.

How You will Elevate Avalara

  • Raise the technical floor of the entire License Management Analyst cohort by converting complex jurisdictional knowledge into repeatable frameworks, reducing senior escalation dependency and helping the team handle greater complexity independently.
  • Build customer trust and retention for Avalara's most valuable accounts by ensuring expert-backed compliance delivery that eliminates errors and surfaces risk before it reaches the client.
  • Increase talent density by modeling ownership, accuracy, and accountability, creating a team culture and domain expertise.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical execution of Avalara's most intricate enterprise customers, managing complex data queries, multi-state research, and high-risk registrations with full accountability for outcomes.
  • Be the designated technical authority for Analysts and Associate Analysts on difficult jurisdictional unblocking efforts, complex filing strategies, and escalation resolution.
  • Raise technical standards by sharing deep tax and licensing knowledge through regular reviews, internal guides, and technical walkthroughs that materially improve the team's collective capability.
  • Be the final technical reviewer for complex deliverables, ensuring the team's output meets the highest standards of accuracy and jurisdictional compliance before reaching the client.
  • Identify complex manual workflows and develop simplified, documented frameworks that promote less-experienced team members to implement advanced compliance tasks independently.

12-Month Success Signals

Within 12 months, you will have:

  • Assumed full ownership of complex enterprise accounts, with no compliance escalations or accuracy gaps during transition.
  • Published internal training frameworks or jurisdiction-specific guides that are in use by the Analyst cohort, with documented reduction in senior escalation requests.
  • Produced measurable improvement in Analyst technical proficiency, evidenced by reduced rework rates, minimized customer escalations, and increased analyst independence with complex filing topics.
  • Maintained zero compliance-related client escalations on owned accounts through the full 12-month period.
  • Driven adoption with an AI-enabled workflow with the broader team, creating a quantified impact on research speed and accuracy.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

AI Expectations

As an AI Bar Raiser, this role must embed AI into jurisdictional research, team mentorship, and compliance delivery, not as convenience tooling, but as a force multiplier with measurable impact. This includes:

  • Develop and share specialized agentic workflows designed specifically to accelerate complex jurisdictional research and data management.
  • Coach team members on how to embed AI into their own workflows to improve research speed and data accuracy, raising the AI capability of the broader team.
  • Pilot and validate new AI-enabled compliance tools, providing domain-specific feedback that ensures technology solves the team's most complex customer use cases.
  • Measure the impact such as time saved, reduction in manual research effort, improved accuracy rates, or enhanced risk detection on complex filings.
  • Apply responsible AI governance standards when influencing compliance interpretations or client-facing outcomes.
