Library Assistant IV – Evening/Weekend Library Assistant (1.0 FTE)

Job Summary:

The Access Services (AS) Library Assistant provides public service and library materials processing for circulation functions such as borrowing and lending activities.
Key responsibilities include processing materials for course reserves and staffing the library help desk. In addition, the AS LA supports and engages with AS administrative reporting, and other LA IV duties that require an understanding of the library, its collections, classification scheme, catalog, and computer systems. Supporting duties involve assisting with the maintenance of book stacks and providing general guidance to student workers in collaboration with other department staff. Reports to the Department Head for Access Services.

Job Responsibilities:

Access Services and Library Operations 60%

● Provides a high level of service to members of the University of San Francisco community and campus guests.

● Opens and closes the library at appointed hours and as directed by library administration.

● Performs other duties within LA IV classification, including identifying materials in need of repair or replacement, processing holds, recalls, departmental notices, etc.

● Assists with shelving, shelf-reading, searching, and shifting of materials within the stacks; assists with the retrieval/return of materials from Lone Mountain storage and stacks areas, as well as recalling of materials from Iron Mountain remote storage facility.

● Supervises student workers and coordinates that work with other Access Services staff and the AS OPE lead.

● Creates and maintains documentation of workflows, procedures, and policies in collaboration with other team members.

● Supports and as appropriate delivers specialized staff and student training (e.g., shifts in stacks, public service desk functions, etc.).

● Assists with support of circulating AS technology (e.g. laptops, peripherals, and accessories).

Course Reserves and Collections Support 30%

● Primary internal and external contact person for course reserves.

● Facilitates and processes course reserve requests - intake and end of term processes.

● Acquires and maintains course reserve materials in collaboration with faculty and reference librarians.

● Communicates and coordinates course reserves strategy with guidance from Access Services OPE Lead and the department head/associate dean.

● Participates in collection preservation program: monitors the condition of general collection materials and the physical stacks areas.

● Provides interlibrary lending (ILL), document delivery, and course reserves processing/support.

Library Support and Activities 10%

● Participates in AS Scholarship Repository support, including scanning and digitization.

● Participates in library cross-training initiatives.

● Participates in professional development activities and stays current with Access Services/Circulation best practices.

● In consultation with the dept. head and OPE Lead, participates in library outreach events and displays and serves on Library and USF committees.

● Special projects and other duties, as assigned.

Work Hours:

● Working hours: 37.5 hours/week

● Working hours will include weekend and evening shifts.

● Hours are subject to change. Including during holidays, intersession, summer session, final examination periods, and in case of the absence of regularly scheduled personnel, and to support operational needs.

● Hire-in rate: $31.26/hr. Minimum rate after successfully completing probationary period: $32.82.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Four years of higher education (120 units) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

● Must possess excellent organizational skills, including the ability to maintain records with great attention to detail.

● Self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

● Team player who works harmoniously with colleagues.

● Demonstrated experience or interest in working with diverse groups, cultural humility, and ability to support the advancement of DEI initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Experience performing work relevant to the position in a college, university or public library, including knowledge of basic Access Services functions in an automated ILS environment (e.g., Innovative Interfaces Sierra).

● Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

● Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and Google Docs.
