Summary

Acceptable Experience and Education
Current student, preferably in public or business administration or have graduated in the past 24 months in public or business administration. Strong work ethic and a self-starter. Preferred: Concentration Studies in Human Resources 

Certificates, Licenses, and other Requirements 
Must have or obtain by date of hire Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso.

Examples of duties


Essential Duties 
Conducts special studies, research, and projects at the request of the department;
 
Establishes and maintains program and project files;
 
Receives and resolves or refers citizen complaints to the proper authority;
 
Screens incoming calls and visitors to determine necessity for call or visits;
 
Screens routine correspondence for the department;
 
Prepares correspondence and recurring reports;
 
Reads and reviews outgoing correspondence for procedural and grammatical accuracy plus conformance to general policy;
 
Takes and transcribes a variety of dictation and correspondence;  
 
Types letters, statements, narrative and statistical reports, minutes, agendas, resolutions and awards;
 
Establishes and maintains working relationship with county officials, news media and the general public;

Arranges for conferences or meetings and provides participants with the topics to be discussed background information;
 
Entrusted with confidential information which pertains to county matters under consideration and personnel involved;
 
May represent department at public and business functions to obtain information and promote goodwill.;
 
Coordinates participation at meetings, boards, special events, speaking engagements, and participation on different County and community events and committees;
 
Makes travel arrangements, prepares itinerary and travel budget, completes expenses report and submits travel vouchers to the County Auditor;
 
Assists with maintaining department’s appointment calendar;
 
Keeps and maintains inventory of office equipment and supplies;
 
Keeps and maintains records of office payroll and time reports;
 
Performs other duties as required by the department;
 
Travels within the county, using personal vehicle at personal expense;
 
May travel outside the county at county and personal expense;
 
This may be an unpaid internship and is only on a voluntary basis;

Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations; 

Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; and
 
Creates a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.

Summary of Position
The Intern performs administrative staff work required to support the activities and operations of the assigned department.  Must maintain a professional caliber of attire and decorum at all times.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
Knowledge of: general office practice and business English, operating practices of county government. procedures and methods including computer keyboard operation; English usage, grammar, punctuation and spelling; techniques for effective interpersonal communications.

Skill/Ability to:  quickly learn State laws relating to activities and operations of the department, deal effectively with the public and governmental officials, understand and carry out oral and written instructions precisely; maintain confidentiality of information; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; read and int
