Position Description:
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated individual to lead our Native American Affairs team. The primary objective of this position is to implement the Nevada Gold Mines’ Native American and Community Affairs strategies. This is a pivotal role in advancing Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) engagement with its surrounding communities, including Indigenous communities, ensuring respectful and mutually beneficial relationships. You will serve as the liaison between NGM and all communities/stakeholders, promoting cultural awareness, transparent communication and fostering meaningful and sustainable economic opportunities through partnerships.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership for the development, implementation and monitoring of the NGM Native American and Community Affairs strategies and budget and manage execution.
- Secure and maintain social licenses through strong relationship building and presence, offering opportunities for ownership and input
- Work collaboratively with all key stakeholders within Nevada Gold Mines and the communities in which the company operates to ensure operating success
- Represent or coordinate representation of Nevada Gold Mines on all relevant non-government boards and community organizations to advance the company corporate social responsibility strategy
- Work collaboratively with the Nevada Gold Mines team leadership, site managers and site functional leaders to build and strengthen key local legislative, agency, Native American and industry relationships
- Represent or coordinate representation of company activities with key business, trade, Native American and industry groups to ensure that Nevada Gold Mines has a positive impact on business in Nevada and other jurisdictions in which the company operates
- Prepare and deliver presentations and reports to key stakeholders related to government relations, Native American Affairs, NGM and the mining industry
- Develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives, engaging with Native American Tribes, aligning with the NGM’s goals and objectives
- Lead the development and ongoing updates (including annual review) of stakeholder engagement planning documents and other governing documents related to Native American and Community Affairs programming
- Coordinate with mine general managers and site leadership to align Native American and Community Affairs strategies with site strategic plans, life of mine plans, expansions, etc. to ensure buy-in
- Build and maintain positive relationships with Native American leaders, community members and businesses through transparent and regular communication, engagement, and collaboration
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profit organizations and industry partners, and community leaders to advance shared goals and objectives
- Lead the Native American Affairs Community Development Committee (CDC) to ensure project proposals are presented to the company and reviewed for funding consideration in a timely manner
- Advocate for policies and practices within NGM that respect and support the rights and interests of Native American communities, including environmental stewardship, cultural awareness & preservation, training and meaningful economic development
- Work to empower Native American communities by supporting economic development opportunities, capacity-building initiatives, and cultural preservation efforts
- Maintain accurate documentation related to engagement activities, including meeting minutes, action trackers and commitment registers
- Oversee process and administration of Native American Scholarship programs to include Newe Numa Scholarship Foundation (NNSF), GBC Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), NA MTC, and Gold Scholarship programs
- Track and report on NGM supported scholarship programs (NNSF, TAP, MTC, and Gold).
- Actively identify and monitor reputational risks associated with mines and projects in Nevada, and ensure these risks are being managed. Bring forward these risks to management when identified
