2025 University Recruiting - Continuous & Expression Technologies Team Intern
MSDAbout the role
Job Description
The Future Talent Program features internships that last up to 12 weeks and will include one or more projects. These opportunities in our Research Division can provide you with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your long-term goals.
Our Research & Development Division is dedicated to advance breakthrough science focused on patient needs. The Continuous & Expression Technologies (CET) group, within the Process Research & Development department, is seeking summer interns with a passion for scientific research and work collaboratively across teams. CET offer opportunities in our state-of-the-art laboratories to solve fundamental synthetic, biological or automation problems relevant to drug development and manufacturing, while functioning as fully integrated members of the company project teams.
CET is responsible for driving drug manufacture innovation across our company's diverse pipeline. CET is seeking interns in three technical areas: Novel Expression Systems (NES), Large Molecule Continuous Manufacturing Technologies (LM CMT) in both upstream and downstream processing. NES is tasked with advancing expression systems across a range of organisms that will be applied to discovery and development of novel biologics and vaccines, as well as to our engineered enzymes. LM CMT is responsible for improving process intensification with both mammalian perfusion cell culture and downstream integrated continuous manufacturing (with focus on data science and automation). This job posting covers opportunities for interns in all the three technical areas above.
Number of intern openings: 3
The summer interns will be exposed to:
In NES, recombinant protein expression optimization. Specifically, research on various building blocks of an expression cassette in one of our yeast expression systems, with a goal to maximize the production. The study could include but not limited to molecular cloning, strain construction, small scale cell growth, protein expression, and analysis.
In LM CMT upstream, fundamentals of process intensification and continuous processing of biologics, expertise in the Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) perfusion cell culture, including evaluation of novel cell retention devices.
In LM CMT downstream, end-to-end integrated continuous biomanufacturing employing state-of-the-art approaches, including automation, data science and engineering technologies coordinating both production and process monitoring across multiple steps in parallel.
The interns will be responsible for accurate electronic notebook recording of experimental details and for analysis and interpretation of data that may be used for internal or external scientific publications which may follow from the internship. Interns will have the opportunity to gain further knowledge, and skill sets via refinement of laboratory skills, introduction to new experimental techniques, exposure to current challenges in research, and perspectives on the practical aspects of drug development. In addition, the intern student will have an opportunity to present their research results in both oral and written formats.
This is a full-time internship position wherein we are seeking intern candidates at all levels with strong academic performance, communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work in a multi-functional and fast-paced environment.
NOTE: If a candidate is selected for an interview, the candidate should be prepared to submit letters of recommendation and a brief research statement and a copy of transcripts.
Education Requirements:
Candidates must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD degree in Chemistry, Biology (e.g. Cell Biology, Virology), Biochemistry, Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical), Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science or a related discipline.
Required Experience and Skills:
Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (12) consecutive weeks beginning in June of 2025
Candidates must have completed at least (2) years of studies toward bachelor’s degree by June 2025
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Candidates should have significant interest in pharmaceuticals.
Candidates should have basic laboratory skills (lab notebook recording, use of instrumentation, analysis and interpretation of data, and safe lab practices), research experience, along with a problem-solving attitude.
Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
