Harborview Medical Center – Radiology has an outstanding opportunity for a DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER - ULTRASOUND SPECIALIST.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Performs and analyzes highly complex diagnostic ultrasound examinations on patients referred for diagnosis. Exercises independent judgment to tailor examinations for acquisition of accurate anatomic and pathophysiologic data relative to patient’s clinical presentation.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Advanced diagnostic imaging, specialized clinical expertise. Radiology Services at Harborview Medical Center offers a full complement of radiology tests and imaging procedures, including nuclear medicine and interventional radiology (angiography).

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs Doppler and spectral analysis of solid organs and transplants in clinical areas such as high risk obstetrics and gynecology, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants, shunt evaluations, and premature neonates. Perform examinations in high risk obstetrical, liver, kidney, and transplants as well as specialty care clinics, the trauma center, and/or recovery room.
- Perform clinical and research non-invasive diagnostic ultrasound examinations including sonography’; monitor patient vital signs and condition during examination; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if necessary.
- Is able to operate the following equipment/systems: PACS, Ultrasound workstations, the Hospital Information System, and the Radiology Information System. Able to print and retrieve images. Can implement down time procedures as needed.
- Review patient medical records and physician referral diagnosis.
- Prepare patient for examination; explain testing procedures; perform physical examination (auscultation, assess physical presentation, and history); select and perform appropriate procedure (s), examination as necessary to provide accurate representation of patient’s anatomy and pathophysiology as determined during the ongoing examination.
- Perform or assist with ultrasound procedures in such areas as the operating room, angiography, catheterization or special procedure suite, using appropriate sterile technique, in conjunction with invasive patient procedures; apply ultrasound instrument to surgically exposed surface of internal organ, under physician direction, for intraoperative examination.
- Provide needle guidance direction to physician during tissue biopsy, cyst aspiration, thoracentesis, amniocentesis, or other surgical procedures.
- Perform calculation of recorded examination data, using complex mathematical formulae to determine patient physiologic parameters such as blood flow velocity, volume indices and embryo/fetal development or gestational age;
- Determine provisional working diagnosis; analyze examination data to define accurate representation of patient anatomy and hemodynamics; generate examination findings.
- Participate with attending physician in diagnosis interpretation sessions; assist physician in the evaluation of patient examination data.
- Maintain adequate computer and/or written records using the Radiology Information System.
- Provide instruction in the theory, techniques, applications, and analysis of diagnostic ultrasound procedures and to physicians, post-doctoral fellow, residents, and student interns.
- Assist with ultrasound suite maintenance which may include requesting supplies, maintaining patient records, assessing daily operational status of equipment.
- Update continuing education, teaching and research materials.
- Assist with evaluation of new and prototype diagnostic ultrasound and related physiological testing equipment; maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.
- This position is involved with patients included in the following age groups:
Infant, 0-1 year
Pre-teen to teen, 10-16 years
Toddler, 1-4 years
Adult, 15-65 years
Child, 5-9 years
Geriatric, 65 years and above
- Will be required to work on-call.


REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of diagnostic ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) AND registered in abdominal and obstetrical ultrasound by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS); AND two years of experience performing the work of a diagnostic medical sonographer

- Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
