Summary

Professional, supervisory, administrative and technical work directing and evaluating all activities for major multiple engineering divisions. An employee in this class performs expert-level professional engineering management work in planning, directing and evaluating the activities of multiple engineering divisions in the design, construction and operation of a public works system. Work includes assigning and reviewing the work of lower level professional, technical and/or administrative supervisors. Work includes establishing and monitoring management controls for assigned operational area and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations pertaining to department operations where applicable; and related work as required.

Examples of duties

(Original Entrance)
  1. Registration as a professional engineer in Louisiana.*
  2. Nine (9) years of engineering experience as a professional Engineer.  At least four (4) years of this experience must have included supervisory responsibilities.  At least five (5) years of this experience must have been in the area of sewer, water, drainage, and/or power infrastructure systems.

(Promotional) 
  1. Registration as a professional engineer in Louisiana.*
  2. Permanent status with the City of New Orleans at a pay grade equal or higher than 96 and four (4) years of exempt level professional engineering experience.  At least four (4) years of this experience must have included supervisory responsibilities.   

NOTE: Professional engineering experience must have been gained after registration as a Professional Engineer.

IMPORTANT: Out-of-state registrations are acceptable. However, any applicant who is not registered as a professional engineer in Louisiana must, if hired, show proof of such registration during his or her probationary period. No person may receive permanent status until this requirement has been met, and no probationary period may extend longer than one year.
   
This position requires a one year probationary period.

* Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify professional engineer's registration/license claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.

A qualifying review of license and experience.
 
This is a non-competitive promotional and original entrance examination in accordance with Rule V, Section 8.1 (b) of the City Civil Service Rules.
