Get to Know the Opportunity:

The Vice President (VP), Group Underwriting leads the development and execution of the underwriting philosophies, practices, governance, and performance of the group underwriting function. This executive role is responsible for developing and implementing underwriting policies, ensuring consistent risk evaluation, and overseeing quality assurance, training, and reporting. The VP plays a critical role in aligning underwriting practices with corporate objectives while supporting talent development and compliance.

The Contributions You'll Make:

  • Develop and execute the underwriting vision and policies and practice framework for the group underwriting function.
  • Lead the design and implementation of underwriting guidelines, authority models, and documentation standards.
  • Oversee the evaluation of risk for group insurance products including Life, Disability, Supplemental Health, and Stop Loss.
  • Ensure pricing accuracy and appropriate application of underwriting methodology across all underwriting activities.
  • Serve as a key liaison with field personnel and clients, ensuring underwriting decisions are well-communicated and aligned with client needs.
  • Represent underwriting internally and externally, and in product development, marketing rollouts, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Serve as a back-up and strategic partner to the SVP, Underwriting.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Lead Underwriting Teams responsible for Quality Assurance, Training, Clinical Underwriting and other functions as required.
  • Hire, train, and develop a high-performing underwriting team; provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback.
  • Lead the governance of underwriting practices, including:
    • Quality Assurance and Auditing (including post-mortems)
    • Training and Onboarding
    • Dashboard and Metrics Reporting
    • Practice Documentation and Policy Deployment
    • Medical and Clinical Underwriting teams.
    • Manage business decision exception requests, including research, documentation, and escalation.
  • Partner with Production Line Underwriting Leaders (PLLs) to support talent development while allowing PLLs to focus on production and capacity.
  • Ensure underwriting operations are compliant with regulatory requirements and support state exams and security awareness initiatives.
  • Lead project management efforts for underwriting-related initiatives.
  • Compliance & Governance: ensure that all underwriting practices comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards.  
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews of underwriting processes to maintain quality and consistency.

Minimum Knowledge & Education

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in business, finance, actuarial science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in group underwriting, with leadership responsibilities.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting practices across Life, Disability, Supplemental Health, and Stop Loss.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing underwriting strategies, policies, and training programs.
  • Expertise in metrics development, reporting practices, and quality oversight.
