WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Summary

Direct departmental operations by establishing compliant policies, procedures, and protocols that support high‑quality transfusion medicine research with a focus on platelet and red cell studies. Lead the design, planning, and execution of clinical investigations, including budget development and oversight, resource allocation and management, and interpretation of complex scientific data for FDA licensing and regulatory submissions. Supervise and develop staff to ensure performance, schedule, and quality standards are consistently met. Drive innovation by developing, validating, and implementing new laboratory and operational methods while resolving project issues and guiding strategic decisions with senior leadership. Represent the department in internal and external scientific forums, providing subject matter expertise in advanced platelet and red cell research.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities): 

  • Establish operational policies, procedures and protocols for the department, ensuring compliance with internal and external policies and regulations.
  • Oversee the design and development of clinical studies, including project planning, budget, resource management and Contract Research Organization (CRO) management, interpreting results of clinical studies in preparation for new applications.
  • Oversee performance of staff, ensuring budgets, schedules and performance requirements are met.
  • Develop, validate and implement new techniques and methods and adapt existing techniques to improve efficiency.
  • Manage project issues, operational decisions, scheduling requirements, and/or contractual clarifications with senior and executive management.
  • Participate and present at meetings with internal and external representatives related to advanced scientific/technical developments pertinent to ongoing or new research areas.

The salary range for this position is $170k- 180k

This is an on-site position, working out of our Rockville-Holland Lab.

This role is not eligible for relocation assistance

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications): 

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, with PhD or MD preferred. PhD in biological sciences preferred, with a strong preference related to platelet or red cell biology
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of related experience in medical/research laboratory (e.g., virology, immunology, molecular biology and/or chemistry testing) or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
  • Experience with regulated licensure studies is preferred. 
  • Management Experience: Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, including direct people management responsibilities.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work on a team.
  • Must be proficient with data management and database development.
  • Must have experience in budget preparation.  
  • Experience with the preparation of investigational new drug (IND) applications and publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts preferred.
  • Knowledge of blood bank operations and manufacturing preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
