About the role

Job Summary:

The Director for Faculty Development will design, implement, manage, and evaluate comprehensive faculty professional development programs and implement and use assessment of student learning to improve education quality and sustain a ‘culture of evidence’ in the College of Medicine. The director will lead with particular emphasis on planning for the opening of the new CDU MD program (medical school) and the LCME accreditation requirements related to faculty development.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean, Academic Affairs in the College of Medicine, the incumbent is responsible for the strategic creation and delivery of robust professional development programs across all faculty teaching, research, and service activities, with a special emphasis on assessment of student learning. The Director will work in collaboration with COM deans, department chairs, and program directors to ensure that all faculty members receive appropriate faculty development, mentoring, and other support essential for long-term professional advancement. The Director will work with faculty in developing assessment and faculty development plans, and monitoring and evaluating the implementation of these plans. The incumbent of the position will also work directly with faculty to ensure that they remain innovative and current, with respect to best practices in teaching and assessment of student learning outcomes, the pedagogical and tactical use of technology, scholarly research and publications, professional presentations and service, community advocacy and intervention, and continuing education for clinical licensure and practice.

The Director will have extensive experience in Health Science and Medical Education including a  broad knowledge of academic affairs management, teaching and learning assessment, data analysis and program evaluation, and faculty professional development. Preferably, the Director will also have knowledge of healthcare organizations and experience with health profession educational programs, health care delivery systems, and their accreditation standards as they relate to student learning outcomes assessment and academic program evaluation. The successful candidate must have faculty experience as well as leadership experience in faculty professional development and/or assessment and program review. The Director should also have experience with regional and specialized accreditation requirements for student learning outcomes assessment and academic program self-evaluation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead  the Center for Faculty Excellence at  the College of Medicine at Charles R. Drew University with the following responsibilities:

  • Create an array of programs,  training workshops, evaluation and consultations for faculty consistent with the needs and accreditation requirements of a new four year medical school.
  • Provide vision and leadership for faculty development initiatives and activities to advance the achievement of faculty teaching, research, and service goals and plans.
  • Create and deliver or facilitate workshops, training sessions and individual counseling sessions for faculty at large and for the faculty leadership of academic departments and programs.
  • Develop and establishes operating goals, policies, and procedures for assessment, as appropriate; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Design and execute mechanisms to establish awareness and build commitment to professional development across faculty teaching, research, and service activities, including in community and clinical settings.
  • Collaborate with academic leadership and individual faculty in the design and planning of course content, establishing positive learning environments and use of course evaluations and student learning assessments as faculty development tools.
  • Analyze and interpret data from program self-evaluations for internal academic program review and external accreditation agency review.
  • Promote a college-wide culture of assessment through consultation, instruction, and professional development with faculty and academic administrators.
  • Collaborate with medical educators and medical school leadership in support and assessment of basic science and clinical teaching faculty of both medical students and graduate medical trainees (interns and residents).
  • Interpret assessment findings and prepares reports to summarize such findings, with particular emphasis on the quality of the assessment efforts and findings that influence institutional decision-making and policy development.
