SUMMARY
Administer self-insured Workers’ Compensation claims. Reports to the Workers’ Compensation Manager. Communicate with Claims Examiners, Claims Analysts, Workers’ Compensation Supervisor, Workers’ Compensation Administrator, Workers’ Compensation Manager, Workers’ Compensation Assistants, Production, Human Resources, Medical Providers, Vendors, Attorneys, Department of Labor, and State WCAB officials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Responsible for the administration of Workers’ Compensation claims.
- Complete milestones towards attaining the position of a Claims Examiner. Complete designated Workers’ Compensation educational segments; company pays approved tuition (100%) and supplies.
- Education: begin five-course WCCA Workers’ Compensation IEA series with ‘CA 10: Workers’ Compensation Claims Intro’.
- Become familiar, identify, and successfully utilize claims and medical terminology, claim forms, and claims handling procedures.
- Become familiar, identify and successfully administer different types of workers’ compensation claims (scheduled versus unscheduled) and types of settlements and stipulations (908i, 908c, C & R and stipulations).
- Participate in and perform investigation and maintain claims; learn to review and evaluate coverage and/or liability; secure, analyze and clearly document necessary information.
- Ensure claim payments are issued in timely and accurate manner.
- Become familiar, learn and establish reserves and monitor at periodic intervals.
- Learn to ensure claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statues, regulations and other legal requirements, and that applicable company procedures and/or management direction is followed.
- Convey claim information (work status, outcomes, decisions, etc.) to all appropriate parties, maintaining professional demeanor in all situations.
- Work closely with Workers’ Compensation Manager and other designated Workers’ Compensation staff.
- Successfully completes all coursework/education as assigned.
- Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
- Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. or B.A. in Business (Finance or Management preferred); will consider Liberal Arts graduates.
- Entry Level.
- Individual must be alert, communicative, analytical, and composed. Above average reasoning ability and interpersonal skills required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment. Excellent customer service skills, responds promptly to customer needs. Detail-oriented with high level of accuracy. Strong organization skills to ensure tasks are completed within deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work primarily conducted in an office setting with good lighting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Must be physically able to commute to buildings throughout the shipyard. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise.
ACCOUNTABILITY
- Claim cost control.
- Full resolution of Employer’s liability for Workers’ Compensation benefits.
- Timely resolution of claims.
- Ensure accurate and timely benefits (payments, notices, etc.).
