About our Team
 

Our Science, Technology, and Medical Journals (STMJ) team takes ownership for making Elsevier journals an attractive place for authors to publish and the quality of the content we publish. In this way we contribute directly to the Elsevier mission of helping researchers and healthcare professionals' advance science and improve health outcomes for the benefit of society.

Within STMJ, the Life Science, Social Science and Economics (LSSSE) team is a dynamic and creative group of some 90 Publishers and Scientific Editors with responsibility for a portfolio of 700+ journals led by a management team of Publishing Directors and the SVP Publishing and working in close collaboration with external Editors. In our (LSSSE) internal employee opinion survey, relationship with peers and with manager are consistently our top-rated attributes.
 

About the Role
 

As Publishing Director, you will manage, develop, and lead a team of Publishers and Scientific Editors and develop an international journal portfolio focused on a number of specific subject areas within Life Sciences.  You’ll work across a subject area/product market group and across multiple geographies to grow and develop a journal portfolio and team against key business metrics. You'll launch and participate in strategic initiatives across the organization.
 

Responsibilities
 

  • Leading PMG (Product Market Group)-level strategic planning and target-setting process working with strategy, marketing, society, finance, and senior management teams.
  • Understand the research environment, maintain a network, and participate in complex industry discussions with high level industry stakeholders.
  • Guiding and coaching team members in external discussions and on building their networks, connecting people as relevant. Supporting publishers to engage with internal centers of expertise.
  • Recognizing key external customer trends and work with the team to translate them and drive innovation.
  • Taking ownership of the overall strategy for PMG and managing delivery. Working with functions or central initiatives that have overarching PMG relevance.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to Publishers. Including how to approach development, planning, and managing Editors/Editorial boards; help set priorities.
  • Driving and leading key cross-functional strategic initiatives.
  • Structurally resolve publishing-wide issues in collaboration with the Publishing Director peer group.


Requirements
 

  • Have Senior level, relevant publishing experience. (Ideally gained in a variety of subject fields/with an international perspective). Coupled with deep understanding of journal development.
  • Display keen awareness and understanding of the global Publishing industry (and related industry/research/policy drivers).
  • Have demonstrated ability to build a network of high-level contacts within the scientific community. Translating customer needs to data-driven strategy.
  • Possess a track record of building productive internal relationships. Including leading/collaborating with project teams, creating visibility for your team, and being an acknowledged expert offering support to others.
  • Experience in leading and developing a successful team in multiple/international locations. This includes the following: Hiring, developing, and retaining talented colleagues. Setting appropriate goals and fostering innovation. Supporting strategic planning; helping navigate challenges in implementation. Assigning responsibilities and involving direct reports in developing and implementing budgets and plans, managing financial performance, and achieving annual targets.
  • Able to maintain an environment of professionalism, enthusiasm, and collaboration with all team members. Cultivating psychologically appropriate spaces and championing diversity among the team.
  • Excel in strategy and innovation. Experience leading/overseeing the development of business strategies, product development and external client pitches; demonstrated ability and creativity to develop new commercially viable opportunities that serve the scientific community.
