While under this designation, the pay rate for this position is $21.00 per hour. Upon successful graduation from the police academy, the trainee is transferred into a Tribal Police Officer position and the pay is adjusted accordingly into the salary range listed.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Enforces laws related to the protection of life and property, directs and controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbance of peace, and arrests violators by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Patrols specific areas on foot or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for assistance
Answers radio-dispatches for police service;
Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons and establishments
Locates, searches, detains, and arrest law violators;
Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons and establishments, and quells disturbances;
Able to drive vehicle both safely and efficiently while under stress to communicate information on the radio or handle emergency situations when called upon;
Interviews and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects;
Gathers evidence effectively and maintains the integrity;
Assists motorists in various situations and directs traffic when needed;
Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations;
Operates police communication and computer equipment to obtain, and report information;
Attends community meetings to discuss crime prevention and problems;
Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars;
Provides assistance and training to subordinates as necessary;
Writes detailed incident, investigation, activity and other reports;
Testifies in court to present evidence by describing situations and actions;
Provides traffic escorts during traditional events;
Maintains weapons and all equipment in functional and presentable condition;
Other position related duties as assigned and required.
QualificationsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED, twelve (12) semester hours of credit in any field of study from an accredited college or university; (2) years’ experience in security field or equivalent education and experience; must be a graduate from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) United States Indian Police Academy, Indian Country Police Officers Training Program; must be able to attain the Special Law Enforcement Commission (SLEC) issued through BIA-OJS; must be able to pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) criteria; must maintain proficiency with firearms by qualifying to department standards on a bi-annual basis; must successfully pass a background check to include criminal history convictions and credit check; must be able pass the post-offer drug screen and annual fitness for duty physical; must possess a valid Texas Driver’s license and be insurable; must be certified in First Aid and CPR; must be able to work shift work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures and government regulations; knowledge of concept of police terminology and general law; ability to physically apprehend a subject (ground self-defense); ability to maintain good composure in dealing with rude and uncooperative subjects; ability to increase skills in police work through law enforcement trainings and certifications; ability to generate detailed narrative reports; knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; ability to manage and maintain professional work ethics on and off-duty and uphold highest regard to non-disclosure information; ability community effectively verbally and in writing; ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce solutions; ability to prioritize functions and multi-task effectively; ability to quickly respond (hand, finger, foot) to a signal when it appears; ability to self-assess performance to make improvements or take corrective action; must be able to effectively present information to top management and public forums. Must have knowledge on police administration, police law, police investigation and criminology; ability to maintain good composure in dealing with rude and uncooperative subjects.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time.
