Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Dean, the Assistant to the Dean provides comprehensive administrative and operational support. This role ensures the smooth functioning of the Dean’s office by managing the Dean's calendar, overseeing special events, and serving as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders. The Assistant to the Dean plays a vital role in supporting the Dean’s leadership both within the University and in the broader community.
Key Responsibilities
- Administrative Operations & Event Support: Manage the Dean’s calendar, including scheduling meetings, travel, and appointments. Coordinate logistics for special events sponsored by the Dean, including commencement. Maintain records and manage office operations, ensuring efficient office management and smooth functioning.
- Confidential Support & Liaison: Provide direct and confidential support to the Dean, including conducting research and analysis, and presenting information. Serve as the liaison between the Dean and internal units, faculty, staff, and external organizations. Act as the Dean’s representative in professional and community organizations.
- Office Operations & Staff Coordination: Oversee the daily administrative operations of the Dean’s office, ensuring smooth office functioning. Coordinate coverage for the front office, managing student workers to ensure adequate support and office efficiency.
- Event Coordination & Special Projects: Coordinate logistics for special events, including commencement, recruitment, and alumni events. Support the Dean in planning and executing various College-wide events. Assist with special projects as assigned by the Dean to support office operations and strategic initiatives.

Position Information
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is one of eight instructional units of San Diego State University. The College is comprised of ten diverse departments and schools: the departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science and Naval Science; the schools of Art, Design and Art History, Communication, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Journalism and Media Studies, Music and Dance, Public Affairs, and Theatre, Television and Film as well as ten research centers. The College is staffed by 47 positions comprised of administrative, clerical and technical staff in addition to over 100 tenured/tenure-track faculty and nearly 100 lecturers/graduate teaching associates serving approximately 5,000 majors.
The Dean’s Office is responsible for the creation, implementation and continued support of the instructional, research, and development processes in the College.

Education and Experience
Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.<
