Job Description:

For the underprepared students, the academic mentor provides a point of contact within the administration; serves as a source of information about the campus, university policies and procedures, student services, and college life; offers guidance in the development of effective study strategies and time management skills; and extends a generous measure of support and encouragement as the student adjusts to college life and academics.

For the student experiencing academic difficulty, the academic mentor provides structure and accountability; offers encouragement as well as practical suggestions for improving study skills and time management; and assists the student in monitoring overall academic performance.  

An academic mentor works twenty hours/week (including a weekly, one-hour staff meeting) and meets individually with a case load of approximately 25 students on a regular, weekly basis.  The mentor maintains a detailed record of assignments, concerns, referrals, and observations of attitude and performance for each student.
