In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Conducts process research, process development and process upscaling for new medical device products.

  • Investigates and evaluates existing technology and designs new methodology, materials, machines or processes as needed for medical device development.

  • Plans, conducts and directs research and/or development of major significance that is highly difficult and complex in nature, necessitating the expert application of advanced knowledge in a particular field of specialization.

  • Supports engineering decision making by providing advice and recommendations to global project teams.

  • Focuses on implementing and executing strategies in own area of expertise and provides thought leadership in own area.

  • Utilizes in depth scientific/technical knowledge within clear framework. Provides expert input to complex assignments.

  • Provides authoritative technical or professional advice and recommendations to influence internal and/or external contacts. Internal and external audience is diverse and interaction mainly requires interpretation of complex information.

  • Develops and applies complex concepts and proposes new and unique approaches, methods, procedures and designs with regular use of ingenuity, creativity and originality to research and/or development that addresses identified ophthalmic medical device / science / technology needs.

  • Applies advanced level engineering principles to the research and development of medical device/science/technology and/or provide engineering expertise to support development.

  • Assures continuity of products and processes through feasibility assessment, research, design, development, compliance to customer and non-customer requirements and transfer to production.

  • Directs outputs of team, project or business activity, often across locations.

  • Provides leadership direction, determining and developing approach to solutions by coordinating multiple resources to solve complex problems.

  • Understands how the needs of other parts of the business and aspects of the external environment may impact their area of responsibility.

  • Leads design reviews, assigns and reviews action items or delegates these tasks.

  • Ensures regulatory / statutory / legislative compliance for all project work.

  • Acts as a mentor in the engineering organization.

  • Accountable for success of a project or activity.

  • Makes decisions independently, within a clear program of action.

Experience:

  • Recognized internally for expertise in ophthalmic surgical device/science/technology industry

  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge and provides expert input to complex assignments

  • Applies advanced principles, theories and concepts within clear framework.

  • Work experience contributing to the formation of new principles and concepts for new product research and/or development.

  • Proven ability to develop solutions for unusually complex problems that is highly original, leading edge and innovative.

  • Provides comprehensive advice on a wide range of issues within single discipline or field of knowledge. Issues are different, but related.

  • Requires evaluation, interpretation and judgment to select the right course of action.

  • Interactions with senior personnel on complex or significant technical matters, often requiring coordination across organizational lines.

  • Expert knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical device/science/technology.

  • Able to develop solutions to complex problems that require the use of, creativity and originality.

  • Robust process management, problem solving skills and superior presentation capabilities.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD
