Position Overview:
The Chief Credit
Officer provides executive leadership and strategic oversight for the Bank’s
credit risk management function, ensuring the safety, soundness, and quality of
the loan portfolio. This role is accountable for the development,
implementation, and governance of enterprise-wide credit policies, underwriting
standards, and risk management practices that align with the Bank’s strategic
objectives and regulatory expectations.
This role leads
credit administration, underwriting, loan approval, and portfolio risk
monitoring functions, while serving as a key advisor to executive leadership
and the Board on credit risk strategy, portfolio composition, and concentration
management. The Chief Credit Officer ensures consistent application of sound
credit principles across all lending activities, including commercial and
consumer portfolios, and oversees the management of complex credit
relationships and troubled assets.
Essential Functions:
- Provide executive oversight and approval authority for large, complex, and high-risk credit transactions, ensuring alignment with the Bank’s underwriting standards and risk appetite.
- Review, structure, and approve credits within assigned authority; evaluate and provide recommendations on credits exceeding authority prior to submission to Loan Committees.
- Chair the Senior Officers’ Loan Committee and collaborate with executive leadership and the Board in credit decisioning processes.
- Partner with the Directors’ Loan Committee Chair to establish agendas, reporting, and governance practices.
- Develop, implement, and continuously enhance credit policies, procedures, and underwriting guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance and alignment with strategic objectives.
- Establish and communicate the Bank’s credit philosophy, ensuring consistent application across all lines of business.
- Provide strategic guidance to executive management and the Board on credit risk, portfolio trends, and concentration risks.
- Monitor overall portfolio performance, including delinquency trends, criticized/classified assets, covenant compliance, and construction loan performance.
- Direct enterprise-wide stress testing of the loan portfolio, evaluating potential impacts under various economic scenarios.
- Oversee borrowing base monitoring and ensure accuracy and integrity of reporting processes.
- Lead the management and resolution of troubled assets, including direct oversight of the Bank’s largest and most complex credit relationships.
- Collaborate closely with Asset Review, Compliance, Internal Audit, and regulatory agencies to ensure strong risk governance and examination readiness.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), ensuring transparent and effective communication.
- Provide expert credit guidance and advisory support to lending teams on structuring, risk identification, and mitigation strategies.
- Partner with line of business leaders to balance growth objectives with prudent risk management practices.
- Resolve credit-related issues identified internally or through regulatory examinations, coordinating cross-functional efforts to implement corrective actions.
- Lead and develop the Commercial Credit Department, including performance management, coaching, succession planning, and technical skill development.
- Promote a strong risk culture and ensure adherence to credit governance standards across the organization.
- This position may require travel within the Bank’s geographic area.
Experience & Education:
- 3+ years supervisory experience that includes performance coaching, writing performance reviews, and making salary recommendations.
- 7+ years of experience in Commercial and Consumer Credit, including large and complex credit structures and oversight of credit policies.
