Asana

💰 $328,000/yr($211,000/yr$328,000/yr)

About the role

Asana's Data Science team helps us fulfill our mission by informing strategy, defining success metrics, and identifying new ways to deliver user value. Data scientists are at the crux of deepening our understanding of the customers and driving more business outcomes by leveraging experimentation, causal inference, statistical and machine learning techniques, and data storytelling.

As a Data Science Area Lead, you’ll be managing a team of data scientists working across several product teams managing different features trying to drive a common goal (e.g. improve customer experience for Asana Core features - Tasks & Projects). You’ll partner closely with product, engineering, and design leads to help set the strategy and direction for the overall Area. You’ll also support and mentor the data scientists on your team.

You are someone who enjoys the challenge of balancing speed of results with robust statistical practice, deciding when to bias for one or the other based on product goals, as well as creating processes for your team that help them do the same. You are as enthusiastic about building and mentoring a team as you are about the challenging technical problems that you and your team will solve. Because the team is growing but still small now, you will balance your time between management and hands-on work with our product leaders, contributing work in experimentation, analysis and modeling.

What you’ll achieve

  • Manage a team of data scientists partnering with Asana’s product teams
  • Partner closely with Product Management, Design, and Engineering leaders to drive product strategy and roadmap
  • Implement team practices that empower cross-functional partners to make data-informed decisions, striking a balance between rigorous quantitative methods and speed of decision-making
  • Guide data scientists in their technical and professional development
  • Work closely with recruiting and other data team managers to help grow the team
  • Make your own hands-on contributions to the team’s data science work — designing and analyzing experiments, building ML models, and answering key questions with data

About you

  • BS/BA in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, related degree, or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of total work experience in data science or an engineering related field
  • 2+ years of experience managing a data science team solving product problems and driving product strategy
  • Focused on maximizing impact for yourself, your team, and Asana as a whole
  • Comfortable with ambiguity; you enjoy figuring out what needs to be done — and then doing it
  • Excited to partner with product teams on both large, strategic data projects and routine partner work
  • Fluency in at least one modern language useful for statistics and/or data processing (e.g. Python, R, Scala)
  • Proficiency with relational databases, SQL, and large-scale distributed data warehousing or processing platforms (e.g. Redshift, Hive, Spark, Elastic MapReduce)

What we’ll offer

Our comprehensive compensation package plays a big part in how we recognize you for the impact you have on our path to achieving our mission. We believe that compensation should be reflective of the value you create relative to the market value of your role. To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.

For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $211,000 - $328,000.. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.

In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits. If you're interviewing for this role, speak with your Talent Acquisition Partner to learn more about the total compensation and benefits for this role.
