Organization and Facilitation of Workshop in Burkina Faso

International Food Policy Research Institute
Washington, United Statesfull_timeVerifiedPosted 29 Aug 2025

About the role

Background

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), with support from the One CGIAR science program on Food Frontiers and Security, is conducting research on the effects of armed conflict on women’s empowerment, livelihoods, and diets, including whether group-based approaches can help to mitigate the negative effects of armed conflict in Burkina Faso. Exposure to and the perceived risk of armed conflict have the potential to affect a wide range of welfare outcomes. Yet there is limited evidence on the specific mechanisms and the potential approaches to mitigating the consequences of armed conflict on empowerment and welfare outcomes for women. Ongoing work uses data from the Soutenir l’Exploitation Familiale pour Lancer l’Elevage des Volailles et Valoriser l’Economie Rural (SELEVER) study in Burkina Faso, as well as public databases on armed conflict and violence (e.g., Armed Conflcit Location and Event Data (ACLED) project database) to address these important questions. The SELEVER study includes an initial phase, conducted from 2017 to 2020, in which extensive data on women’s empowerment was collected using the project-level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (pro-WEAI). During and since this period, there has been a marked increase in violent events. More recently a second phase (SELEVER2) has been implemented, which focuses on using group-based platforms to support women’s livelihoods especially in times of violent conflict and also includes a corresponding study.
