Pratt & Whitney Hot Section Aerodynamics and Heat Transfer (HS-ATF) organization is responsible for aerodynamic and thermal design of combustors, turbines, diffusers and hot section frams in world class commercial and military jet turbine engine and aircraft systems

The HS-ATF organization is seeking a heat transfer or aerodynamics Intern with strong technical, communication and teamwork skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing analysis or data reduction and interpretation on one of the components or systems that our team is responsible for.

What You Will Do

  • You will work in one of our technical areas alongside engineers, in turbine aerodynamics, combustor aerodynamics, aero-thermal systems modeling (cooling and purge flows) or thermal modeling of cases and frames.
  • Work will vary based on interest and academic program
  • Simulate airflow through turbine stages with physics-based analysis tools to optimize engine performance and turbine efficiency.
  • Develop 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to analyze turbine blade profiles, pressure distributions, and flow characteristics.
  • Collaborate with the aerodynamics team to develop new turbine technologies with cascade and rotating rig data, engine data, and state of the art numerical methods.
  • Work on the design and optimization of combustor components to enhance airflow and combustion stability.
  • Perform CFD simulations to evaluate fuel-air mixing, temperature distribution, and emissions reduction strategies.
  • Assist in developing combustion models to predict and improve combustor performance in various operating conditions.
  • Analyze heat transfer mechanisms in turbine cases and frames to optimize thermal management.
  • Support the design and evaluation of cooling strategies for critical components using numerical simulation tools.
  • Assist in determining thermal loads and ensuring the structural integrity of gas turbine frames under high-temperature operating conditions.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical design, materials, and performance engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation of design analyses and results.
  • Contribute to problem-solving discussions and propose innovative solutions for thermal and aerodynamic challenges.
