Where the chemistry happens…

You will support the Molecular Breeding Scientist in shaping molecular breeding strategy towards accelerated development of Vegetable Seeds varieties, primarily onion and carrot.

You will be responsible for the execution of research project activities  as well as for the development of tools and technologies that enable the implementation of genetic information in variety development in an efficient manner.

This position is located in Davis, CA and offers a hybrid working arrangement with a combination of working onsite and remotely each week. 

As a Senior Specialist Molecular Breeding, You Create Chemistry By...

  • Actively participating across different departments (phytopathology, breeding, pre-breeding, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics)
  • Being responsible for the preparation of RGC dashboards, development of diagnostic markers, support with MABCs, perform quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, running Genome wide association (GWAS) analysis.
  • Performing plant tissue sample collection and interacting with Molecular Services for nucleic acid isolation and genotyping.
  • Being responsible for the maintenance of Integrated Genetic maps, marker improvements and development of genome wide markers, Infinium XT add-ons, maintenance of marker sets
  • Actively participating in the Technology Development portfolio, including Phoenix, RGC pipeline, Dashboard development, new pipeline development and add-ons

Key Functions: 

  • Perform trait discovery by QTL mapping and/or GWAS.

  • Perform germplasm structure analysis and facilitate development of dashboards.

  • Update and maintain key technologies and tools for multiple crops such integrated genetic maps, RGC pipelines, GWAS pipelines, QTL mapping pipelines and Phoenix repositories.   

  • Responsible for the set-up, scheduling and execution of molecular research projects with our genotyping service laboratories.

  • Analyze large data sets generated with the latest molecular marker and sequencing technologies (SNP genotyping and whole or sub genome sequencing).

If you...

Education

  • MS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with 2-5 years of applicable experience.
  • BS in Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields with 5-8 years of applicable experience.

Experience

  • Experience with molecular laboratory methods, techniques and marker platforms (Nucleic acid isolation, PCR setup, qPCR, SNPs, etc.).
  • Experience with Project Report writing and presentations, multiple overlapping research projects
  • Experience with quantitative genetic data analyses methods (Linkage Mapping, QTL mapping, etc.)

Knowledge/Skills

  • Functional understanding of Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry and Statistics
  • Ability to operate genetic linkage and QTL analysis software (Mapmaker, JoinMap, R, QTL Cartographer, MapQTL)
  • Exposure to basic DNA analysis methods such as BLAST, homolog comparison, primer design, etc.
  • Ability to work with large datasets.

Pay Transparency

BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive Pay Range for this role is $74,720 - $102,740. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
