Veterinary Intern

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Racing Veterinary Intern must be highly motivated, be willing to work untraditional “racetrack hours”, as needed, and demonstrate an interest in learning about the fundamentals of the Racetrack Safety Program. This person will work alongside the Veterinary staff, Track Maintenance, and Racing Management staff.  This individual must be willing to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information, including but not limited to, veterinary medical records, vet’s list information, and any pending cases. Horseshoe Indianapolis staff is dedicated to fostering the educational opportunity this position offers.

• Duties will include communications between horsemen and staff.
• Data entry, generating reports, organizing schedules.
• Veterinary duties as assigned.
• Requested to work on big event days, such as Family Days, Indiana Derby, Quarter Horse Days, etc.
• Duties could increase based on capabilities of individual interns.
• Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

• Collegiate study in Veterinary field and/or related experience in field.
• Must possess strong communication skills, be flexible and detail oriented.
• Ability to read and write; basic computer knowledge; active listening skills; ability to meet goals and deadlines; some basic knowledge of horse racing terms, betting and programs.
• Must be able to obtain an Indiana Horse Racing License.

Horseshoe Indianapolis has developed an industry-leading racetrack safety program over the last decade, with the mission of going above and beyond to promote a culture of safety and welfare for our equine athletes.  With the additional safety initiatives in place and the recent implementation of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) Racetrack Safety Program (RSP), Horseshoe Indianapolis is investigating ways to reduce the demands of time placed on the Veterinary Staff, Track Maintenance, and Track Management throughout the robust race meeting.  A Racetrack Intern/Racetrack Safety Intern would meet this need; provide an opportunity to share the workload, reduce the demands of time placed on the above-mentioned staff, and create exposure and a learning opportunity for a qualified individual.  Horseshoe Indianapolis understands that the recruitment and retention of qualified individuals who have an interest in horse racing are critical to the long-term success of this industry.
