Positional Summary

The Associate Dean of Students directs the Division of Student Affairs’ efforts in student risk mitigation, supporting student safety and wellbeing.  The Associate Dean of Students manages and oversees university interdisciplinary support teams (e.g., the A-Team, C-Team, PPD Team and more) administrative support of student protests and demonstrations, and off-campus student relations.  This position also plays critical roles in implementing the institution’s 24-7 student crisis response system and the Student Behavioral Assessment Team.  In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President of Policy and Governance  and the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Students provides flexible management and coordination for emerging special projects and those within all non-clinical functional areas.

 

Key Position Duties

Student Risk Mitigation -- 35%

  • Direct the university’s risk mitigation approach for celebratory bonfires, Last Day of Classes, and other large student events.  Collaborate with Corporate Risk Management, University Counsel, Duke University Police Department, Student Engagement, Duke Athletics, and DuWell to mitigate risks and increase student safety.  Coordinate, recruit, and train university interdisciplinary support teams to support these efforts.
  • Coordinate Division’s approach to fostering student free expression, in collaboration with Duke Police, University Communications, Student Engagement, and other partners.  Advise students and organizations to support operation within Pickets, Protests, and Demonstration policy.  Host trainings and presentations.
  • Coordinate the development and execution of emergency management plans related to any student-related emergency event in collaboration with Duke Emergency Management, Student Affairs Executive Leadership Team, and other campus partners.

 

Dean of Students Office -- 30%

  • Serve as a leader within the Dean of Students Office to manage emergent projects and needs, closely collaborating with the Assistant Vice President of Policy and Governance and Senior Associate Dean of Students, Student Support Services.
  • Manage annual and special projects for various functional areas within the Dean of Students Office across all areas including events/projects needing leadership and coordination.
  • Serve as a liaison for the Dean of Students Office and Division of Student Affairs to key partners.
  • Serve as Assistant Vice President of Policy and Governance’s primary designee to implement administrative action against students and/or student groups to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the university community when needed. 
  • Serve as a facilitator of non-disciplinary adaptive conflict resolution models, as directed by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
  • Counsel students in academic, personal, and disciplinary matters.  Assess at-risk students for additional intervention by appropriate personnel (e.g., mental health providers) and serve as a case manager for students experiencing significant personal, financial, and/or health challenges as directed by DukeReach.
  • Serve as Dean On-Call in 24-hour emergency on-call rotation.  Respond to crises involving students.
  • Serve on the Student Behavioral Assessment Team, conduct threat assessments, and participate in ongoing training.
