Engineer - Fleet Support and Systems Engineering
General Dynamics Electric BoatAbout the role
Overview
There’s never been a better time to join the shipbuilding industry. As demand for cutting-edge naval technology grows, General Dynamics Electric Boat is at the forefront—designing, building, and maintaining the most advanced submarines in the world. Our work is mission-critical, supporting the U.S. Navy and strengthening national security.
About Department 468 – Fleet Support and Systems Engineering
Department 468 – Fleet Support and Systems Engineering provides systems engineering support for in-service VIRGINIA, OHIO, and SEAWOLF Class submarines under the Planning Yard OMNIBUS contract. The mission of the Department is to drive innovation, deliver high-quality technical solutions, and support the organization’s strategic goals through engineering excellence. We accomplish this by managing engineering changes and documentation updates including SRDs, SHIPALTs, TEMPALTs, VIRs, LARs, RLARs, and MCRs, while ensuring ship configuration records remain accurate. We coordinate and issue responses across disciplines for Liaison Action Requests (LARs) and Departure for Specifications (DFSs), support NAVSEA-directed tasking and provide systems engineering support for interdisciplinary products and services within the directorate and engineering expertise for specialized systems such as Deep Submergence Systems (DSS), Escape and Rescue Systems, Dry Deck Shelters (DDS), and Advanced Seal Delivery Systems (ASDS). We provide on-site support and work directly alongside the Navy shipyards and bases at Norfolk, Portsmouth, Pearl Harbor, and Guam to keep our submarines safe, modernized and fully mission-ready through first time quality driven from efficiency and innovation.
Role Overview
Join the Fleet Support and Systems Engineering (D468) Systems Engineering team. Candidates will be responsible for various activities required to maintain and enhance the current submarine fleet, which consists of delivered ships in all classes (OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA). Maintenance and enhancement activities include managing potential design changes to commissioned ships, developing documentation for class/ship modernization, and providing technical direction in support of emergent problems. As a Systems Engineer in D468's Fleet Systems Engineering team, you will provide systems engineering support* for interdisciplinary products and services within the directorate and as well ensuring that multiple disciplines involved with interdisciplinary tasking work effectively and meet invoked requirements.
* Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining stakeholder needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements and interfaces, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation. Systems Engineers have roles and functions embedded in all aspects of a project (design, build, and sustainment).
