Staff Data Engineer
AcubedAbout the role
WAYFINDER
Our Wayfinder team is building scalable, certifiable autonomy systems to power the next generation of commercial aircraft. Our team of experts is driving the maturation of machine learning and other core technologies for autonomous flight; we are creating a reference architecture that includes hardware, software, and a data-driven development process to allow aircraft to perceive and react to their environment. Autonomous flight is transforming the transportation industry, and our team is at the heart of this revolution.
The Opportunity/Role Description
As Staff Data Engineer, you will be the chief architect of the data platform that underpins the future of autonomous flight. You will own the technical vision for evolving and improving our data pipelines and infrastructure, designing systems to support the next generation of certifiable, AI-powered aviation.
This is a deeply technical, hands-on leadership role. You will work side-by-side with senior members of our data and ML teams to deliver world-class data operations. In this dynamic and agile environment, you will be instrumental in delivering a continuous flow of data for new ML-based applications, all while strategically evolving our data processes and systems for long-term scalability and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Lead architectural evolution of our core data platform, providing technical leadership for large-scale data ingestion, processing, and curation systems.
- Partner with global cross-functional Airbus teams and stakeholder (ML, Labeling, Flight Lab, Simulation) to understand data needs and deliver robust, end-to-end solutions.
- Define and advance data labeling strategy, developing pipelines for efficient auto-labeling, data mining, and robust Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) quality assurance.
- Champion data quality by identifying and resolving gaps in data coverage and label integrity, 'closing the loop' from model deployment to data refinement to enhance model performance.
- Develop actionable metrics and dashboards for continuous monitoring and improvement of data quality and availability.
- Mentor engineers and scientists to elevate the team's technical bar, leading by example through code contributions, design reviews, and establishing engineering best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of professional experience in data engineering or software engineering, with a significant focus on building and scaling data systems for Machine Learning applications.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with modern data orchestration frameworks, preferably Dagster.
- Demonstrated expertise in architecting and optimizing large-scale data pipelines for diverse Computer Vision and ML use cases.
- Deep, practical experience with various database technologies, with specific expertise in relational (PostgreSQL) and OLAP (ClickHouse) systems being highly valuable.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing data quality frameworks and metrics to enhance existing data flows.
Bonus points
- Experience working with large-scale sensor data (e.g., images, video, LiDAR).
- Strong understanding of vector databases for semantic search and data mining.
- Experience in safety-critical development (e.g., aviation, automotive, medical).
- A genuine interest in aviation and autonomous systems.
Compensation:
The estimated salary range for this position is $217,687 to $251,506 annually. Enjoy comprehensive benefits: health insurance, paid time off, holidays, 401(k), Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account, Airbus Employee Share Ownership Plan, flight training, and more.
