Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking to hire a Nursing Supervisor for the Chicago Veterans’ Home. This position serves under the direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing to oversee and supervise professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in the care and treatment of veterans throughout the veteran home. Essential Functions

  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • In accordance with established standards and administrative policies, serves as nursing supervisor on an assigned shift with authority for total supervision of professional and non-professional staff and oversight for the continuing care of residents by facilitating care with facility staff in other areas of the home, such as restorative nursing, dietary planning, social workers, clergy and physical therapy.
  • Develops and establishes the goals and objectives of nursing care and clinical support services.
  • Conducts staff meetings with both subordinate managers and other subordinate staff to discuss new policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in nursing.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience in a public or business organization.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of professional experience supervising professional nursing staff.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience recommending and implementing nursing policies and procedures relative to latest trends and nursing standards.
  • One (1) year of professional experience reviewing program needs, setting priorities, and assigning nursing staff to ensure compliance with standards of care and practice for a public or private organization.
  • One (1) year of professional experience training nursing staff on nursing care practices and techniques.
  • One (1) year of professional nursing experience communicating in verbal or written form with patients and/or individuals.
