Position Overview
We are seeking a strategic and experienced Senior Environmental Leader to oversee and drive environmental programs across our North American (United States and Canada) operations. This individual will be responsible for leading environmental compliance, risk management strategies, and supporting sustainability initiatives, in alignment with regulatory requirements and corporate goals. This leader will be shaping both site-level performance and corporate strategy. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in environmental regulations, strong leadership skills, and a collaborative approach to advancing environmental performance across manufacturing and supply chain operations. The role has 4 direct reports.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of environmental strategies across all North American sites, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, provincial regulations in Canada and municipal regulations).
- Provides expert technical leadership and oversight for the environmental program, including air, water, waste, chemical storage, and hazardous materials management.
- Oversee permitting processes, regulatory reporting, audits, and agency interactions.
- Support the development and implement programs to reduce environmental impact, including emissions, energy use, water consumption, and waste generation.
- Partner with operations, engineering, and sustainability teams to integrate environmental considerations into capital projects, process improvements, and product development.
- Provide leadership, technical guidance and mentoring to site Environmental teams to develop site specific environmental plans to align with corporate initiatives, driving consistency in environmental practices across facilities.
- Leads significant incident investigations and root cause analyses related to environmental events; ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
- Monitor emerging environmental regulations and industry trends; assess potential business impacts and recommend proactive responses.
- Support corporate ESG and sustainability reporting, including data collection, target-setting, and communication of progress.
- Act as main point of contact for regulatory inspections, audits and regulatory responses.
- Manage vendors providing environmental related technical services and products.
Education & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field required. Relevant professional certification desired.
Years of Experience:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in environmental leadership roles, preferably within the chemical, manufacturing, or process industry sectors.
- 5+ years in a senior or leadership role.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. environmental regulations (air, water, waste…).
- Familiarity with Canadian provincial environmental regulations (air, water, waste…)..
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets for environmental projects and services.
- Demonstrated experience working with regulatory agencies and managing multi-site environmental programs.
