The Finance & Legal Group’s mission is to protect and serve Canva and its key stakeholders; that is, protecting Canva from external pressures and risks whilst balancing the need to best serve our teams. The team is well respected and embedded within Canva, often sought for its opinions and inputs into Company wide goals.
About the tax team
We want to make tax painless (our crazy big goal!). Our mission is to modernize a traditional tax cost center into "tax-as-a-service", to 'protect and serve' the business, the needs of our employees, our investors, global Government and Tax Authorities where we operate, and ultimately the users of Canva's amazing product. What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
As the Canva US Team continues on this exciting period of growth and traverses the ever increasing complexity of US tax issues, we are expanding our team to include a newly created Corporate Tax Senior Manager, US role. Reporting to the Head of US Tax and working along side the US Tax Senior located in Sydney, the core responsibilities of this role include:
- Preparation of complex international tax provision/return calculations, including GILIT, FDII, BEAT, Section 965, Section 901, & Subpart F
- Review of US international tax compliance
- Support various complex tax matters such as Section 174 capitalization studies, M&A integration, research of complex tax positions, US implications of transfer pricing calcs (prepared by TP team)
- Assist with tax return compliance including 1120-F filings and method changes
- Manage implementation of internal controls into the US GAAP tax provision process
- Collaborate with tax managers outside of the US implement and manage global tax governance including clear and sustainable processes and procedures to manage tax risks and ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations
- Generate US cash tax forecasting reports and contribute to executive level reporting packs/decks
- Support documentation of income tax strategies, policies, and positions
- Conduct technical research and analysis on US and US-international tax matters
- Collaborate in designing scalable processes and creating process documentation detailing the team’s policies and procedures
- Manage the direct tax controversy process, including SALT, by reviewing and responding to notices and liaising with auditors
- Preparation/review of Americas (Canada, LATAM) foreign tax provision packages
- Support Americas global expansion including new entity creation and compliance
- Collaborate effectively with Canva business functions, including Accounting, FP&A, Legal, HR, etc.
You're probably a match if
- 8+ years of relevant tax experience including a mix of accounting firm and industry experience (must include industry experience; tech experience is a plus)
- A strong background in US compliance and ASC 740 tax accounting, including US international tax
- IPO experience is a plus
- Ability to build strong, collaborative working relationships
- Experience working in a high growth, rapidly scaling environment
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
- Ability to succinctly communicate complex tax topics
