General Description and Classification Standards

The Tax & Permit Specialist I is an entry level position that is responsible for managing and processing tax and permit applications, ensuring compliance with local and state regulations. This role requires attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a thorough understanding of tax laws and regulations.  As well as involves working closely with various departments and external stakeholders to facilitate the issuance of tax certificates and/or permits and the collection of taxes. This job requires a skilled business professional in carrying out the input, processing, and review of business accounts within an account management environment. This role is a non-supervisory position.

Supervision Received 

Works under very general supervision.  May work independently or with other workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.

  • Verifies the accuracy of submitted documents and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. 
  • Responds to inquiries from taxpayers regarding tax and permit requirements, procedures, and obligations. 
  • Maintains accurate records of all transactions and communications. 
  • Collaborates with other City departments to ensure consistent enforcement of tax and permit laws and regulations. 
  • Stays informed about changes in tax and permit laws, regulations, and policies that may affect tax and permit administration. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of when to escalate issues when applicable. 
  • Ability to follow direction and work independently.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Education and Experience 

  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or public administration, or closely related field (Additional years of experience may be considered as a substitute for the required degree on an exceptional basis, with a minimum of six (6) years of professional related experience in processing tax and permitting). 
  2. Two (2) years of experience in processing tax and permitting. 
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software. 
  4. Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to explain complex regulations in a clear and professional manner. 
  5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.

 

Special Requirements 

  • Attention to Detail: Ensures accuracy in municipal tax calculations and reporting. 
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Keeps abreast of changes in municipal tax laws and regulations. 
  • Problem Solving: Identifies issues and implements solutions to enhance municipal tax operations. 
  • Customer Focus: Provides excellent service to businesses and stakeholders 

 

Preferred Education 

Three (3) plus years of tax and permitting experience in municipal government. Experience in municipal government is a plus.

None required
