General Description and Classification Standards 

Provides direct supervision of Fleet Maintenance Operations for the Atlanta Police Department. Assists in planning, directing, and coordinating the vehicle and equipment maintenance program. 

Responsibilities include managing and supervising the fleet, overseeing staff, and ensuring vehicle and equipment maintenance. This role also involves implementing preventative maintenance programs, developing long-range plans, and determining compliance with current directives related to planning and programming.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  May perform other duties as assigned. 

  • Leads yearly Vehicle Purchase Planning for the Atlanta Police Department. 
  • Sources and collaborates with select vendors for purchasing, upfitting, and vehicle maintenance. 
  • Works with the Department of Public Works to create a maintenance schedule, ensuring the Atlanta Police Department has properly functioning vehicles in service. 
  • Provides data reporting and analysis for the Fleet Department. 
  • Reviews daily and weekly reports and offers recommendations when necessary. 
  • Manages the entire fleet operating budget for the Atlanta Police Department, including planning and policy recommendations. 
  • Oversee the purchase of equipment and supplies, ensuring spending aligns with approved budgetary limitations and legal guidelines. 
  • Participates in long-range planning, capital outlay, improvement projects, and annual departmental budget preparation. 
  • Coordinates the acquisition, transfer, and disposal of motor vehicles, ensuring proper accountability and managing the fuel allocation program. 
  • Manages assigned areas or related areas typically through subordinate supervisors. 
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains accurate maintenance and inventory records for the fleet. 
  • Manage employees by leading meetings, providing training, addressing personnel complaints, inputting and reviewing payroll records, approving time off, and completing employee performance appraisals. 
  • Manages internal and external customer requests and complaints. 
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with the public, department heads, employees, and vendors. 
  • Maintains a safe work environment, ensuring that safety and fire equipment meet specifications for the department and respond to incident reports. 
  • May accept responsibility for major vendor coordination, specific fleet programs, or other significant initiatives. 
  • Reviews and research bid requests; may assist with audits. 

Decision Making 

Follow standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. Selects from multiple procedures and methods to complete tasks and may interpret organizational policies, recommending exceptions as necessary. May make purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organizational guidelines. 

Leadership Provided 

Holds formal supervisory authority over a workgroup, including sworn and civilian employees. Leadership responsibilities encompass training, coaching, discipline, performance management, scheduling, and more.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully.  It is not an exhaustive list 

  • Knowledge of operating automotive and light motorized equipment, as well as automotive and equipment terminology, including diagnostic codes. 
  • Skill in the use of computers and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other standard business software packages.

    • Perform research, study, and analyze fleet maintenance issues. 
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
    • Supervise and evaluate the work of team members.
