The University of Southern Maine (USM) invites applications for the position of Senior Director of Auxiliary Services, responsible for guiding a portfolio of dynamic, revenue-generating operations that enhance the student experience and support the financial sustainability of the institution.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Business Officer and Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Senior Director provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and fiscal management for a diverse portfolio of auxiliary services, including dining, housing, conferences, the university store, parking and transportation and related programs.

This role requires a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader who can grow revenue streams, build strong partnerships across campus and ensure exceptional service experiences for the university community.

The Senior Director leads the strategic direction, financial performance and operational effectiveness of USM’s auxiliary enterprises. The role focuses on developing innovative services, strengthening partnerships and ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of auxiliary operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all Auxiliary Services operations, including dining, housing, conferences, the university store and parking and transportation.
  • Work closely with university leadership to develop and implement strategies that position USM’s auxiliary operations for long-term success. 
  • Lead and develop a management team responsible for delivering high-quality services that support student success and the broader campus community.
  • Develop and implement long-range strategic plans to ensure Auxiliary Services operations remain innovative, financially sustainable and responsive to evolving campus needs.
  • Manage the financial performance of Auxiliary Services operations, including budget development, revenue generation, expense monitoring and long-term financial planning.
  • Oversee contracts and partnerships with external service providers and ensure strong vendor performance and compliance with institutional expectations.
  • Use data, operational metrics and industry trends to identify opportunities for service improvements, operational efficiencies and new revenue streams.
  • Foster a workplace culture centered on service excellence, collaboration, inclusivity and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all operations comply with applicable university policies, regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with university leadership and campus partners to align Auxiliary Services initiatives with institutional priorities and student needs.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of operational leaders while supporting staff development, succession planning and organizational effectiveness across Auxiliary Services.

This is a full-time position based primarily on the Portland campus with an annual salary of $105,000.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience, preferably within higher education or complex service operations.
  • Demonstrated success managing auxiliary or revenue-generating operations.
  • Experience negotiating and managing contracts with vendors and service providers.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams.
  • Strong financial management, planning, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
