The Director, Business Development and Strategic Partnerships will serve as a member of the Technology Strategy and Strategic Partnerships team, working in partnership with cross functional partners and the executive management team. This position will play a key role in the evaluation and management of new and existing partnerships and alliances that add content and capabilities to 10x’s platforms and product roadmap, as well as major strategic partnerships with other key players in the industry.

The Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships will need to excel at managing multiple priorities, succeed in communicating with all levels within the organization, and provide immediate contribution.
This position will report to the Senior Director, Technology Strategy and Strategic Partnerships and will be located in Pleasanton, CA. We are open to receiving applications from qualified candidates nationwide, and will be willing to consider remote applicants.
What you will be doing:
Conceive of, source, execute, and manage partnerships and collaborations
Some of these partnerships will be focused on delivering specific product capabilities or content through external partnerships, while others are broader in nature, with higher level implications for 10x and its corporate strategy.
For all partnerships, interface with cross functional 10x team members such as Legal, Finance, Marketing, Sales, and R&D to:
- Develop and maintain the strategic thesis and framework for partnerships and collaborations to meet 10x’s strategic and financial objectives
- Internally advocate and influence to drive 10x towards optimal paths forward for each partnership
- Manage the day to day execution of partnerships - e.g. managing the cadence, agenda, and priorities of external interactions, and developing and negotiating term sheets and, in some instances, associated deal models / valuations
Actively ensure ongoing communication and understanding about partnerships across the organization
Ensure that key stakeholders across the organization continuously possess current information about partnership status, priorities, and outputs / deliverables that team members can count on from partnerships. Keep senior leadership well-informed about partnership arrangements and prepare them as needed for interactions that they may have with representatives from external parties.
Act as a member of the Technology Strategy and Strategic Partnerships team to shape its vision for the mid-/long-term product roadmap by offering perspectives on capabilities or collaboration opportunities that that may exist in 10x’s industry landscape, or adjacent market/growth opportunities more broadly
Minimum Requirements
- An advanced degree (MBA or Ph.D. in a field relevant to the life sciences), plus a minimum of 6+ years of post-MBA or post-Ph.D. experience in the life sciences, genomics, or biopharmaceutical industries in roles heavily involved in the identification, development, execution, and management of deals and strategic partnerships with external parties.
- An additional 5+ years in directly analogous roles in the life sciences industry may obviate the need for an advanced degree
- The ability to take an elevated strategic and cross-functional perspective and consider how they relate to 10x’s corporate priorities, especially for major strategic partnerships
- Disposition to collaborate with and appreciate the needs of internal stakeholders, coupled with the conviction to ultimately assert and champion an optimal recommended path forward for 10x, often requiring diplomatic prioritization of needs across functions
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, project management and organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to make sound business judgments.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills as demonstrated by ability to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and build credibility throughout all functions and levels in the organization.
- Energetic, resourceful self-starter with high integrity, strong executive presence and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment.
- Flexibility to travel up to 25%.
- Experience drafting term sheets and negotiating contracts.
