Position Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) is seeking a highly qualified individual with strong leadership skills and a strong background in the to serve as the Deputy Director (Senior Public Service Administrator, Opt 1.) The successful candidate will manage programs through subordinate management personnel for the Bureaus of Air, Water and Land and Division of Laboratories. Serves as a member of Director’s executive staff, participates in, and directs the execution, formulation, and implementation of Agency policy, rules and regulations, and general managerial practices. Establishes, represents and maintains effective liaison with public and private organizations and inter-governmental relationships.

Essential Functions

Serves as the Deputy Director of operations at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA)

  • Plans, designs, develops, directs, reviews, and coordinates the activities of operational and program activities and personnel within the Agency through subordinate management personnel for the Bureaus of Air, Water and Land and Division of Laboratories.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and modifies existing, or develops new program objectives and operational parameters to achieve Agency goals.
  • Revises current Agency operations and programs defining areas requiring additional funding for future improvements.

Serves as a full line supervisor.

  • Assigns/reassign and reviews work.
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance.
  • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
  • Establishes goals and objectives.
  • Approves/disapproves time off requests.
  • Adjusts first level grievances.
  • Effectively recommends and imposes discipline, up to and including discharge.
  • Prepares and signs performance evaluations.
  • Determines and recommends staffing needs to achieve program goals.

Participates in, and directs the execution, formulation, and implementation of Agency policy, rules and regulations, and general managerial practices.
