Job Description:

Summary:

The role of “Course Marker” allows American University graduate students to play a vital role in teaching and learning at AU, working directly with faculty and academic staff to provide a high-quality educational experience for students in CORE-200. The primary role of a marker is to assist in the assessment of students’ work using the requisite marking criteria/rubric and to provide students with feedback that supports their learning and growth.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities below outline the range of directed and self-directed duties undertaken by markers.

  • Attend training sessions in December 2024 or January 2025 to ensure familiarity with assessment requirements and relevant marking rubrics.

  • Assess student work and provide constructive feedback based on the criteria/rubrics provided by the instructional team within the required timeframe.

  • Identify and report concerns related to academic integrity (e.g., plagiarism) to the instructional team in accordance with University policy.

  • Attend and actively participate in a one-hour (paid) marker meeting for each assignment cycle.

  • Track time spent on marking tasks and provide prompt feedback to the instructional team if the estimated time for marking is insufficient.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:

  • Part-Time.

  • 20 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $19.00-22.00 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student at American University.

  • Must reside in the DMV area.

  • Ability to commit to a minimum of 15 work hours during the weeks of Feb.10-14, Mar. 3-7, Mar. 31-Apr 4, and Apr 21-25.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong time management and organizational abilities.

  • Experience with technology systems, including Canvas and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience as a teaching assistant, grader, or in a similar role is desirable but not essential.
