Department Overview
South Operating Room (SOR) is a large 25-bed OR primarily an adult inpatient operating room with a small volume of outpatient procedures including: Cardiac/ Thoracic, General Surgery/Minimally Invasive/ Colorectal/Bariatric, Gynecology, Oral Maxillofacial, Neuro/neuro spine, Orthopedic/orthopedic spine, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Transplant, Urology, Vascular, Robotic (Urology/GYN/Oral), and Trauma. Surgical procedures on infants and children less than 18 years of age are also performed if the procedure requires specialized equipment found only at this location.
The Perioperative Patient Assistant 1, functions as a member of the surgical team, while under the direct supervision and direction of the perioperative registered nurse.
The PPA 1 will provide assistance with cleaning and preparing operating rooms, retrieving and cleaning equipment, retreiving and stocking supplies and related items; supports the environment of the unit or service; supports patient care through assistance with prepping and opening supplies before surgery.

Function/Duties of Position
Equipment
- Assisting in set-up
- Retrieving equipment
- Cleaning equipment
- Immediately available outside the OR
Cleaning the OR Space Opening supplies
- Wiping down equipment, furniture, and OR space
- Mopping
- Partnering with a team to achieve an efficient process and meet a turnover target time for completion
Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent AND
One year work experience in any field.
Ability to communicate well with others.
Ability to safely lift and transfer patients, equipment, supplies.
Must be responsible and properly trained in the transportation of bio-hazardous items within 90 days of hire.
A PPA candidate may be required to have a valid BLS certification at time of hire as indicated on the position description.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of (or enrollment in) the Sterile Processing Course; OR
- Certified Nurse Assistant; OR
- 1 year job experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical laboratory with exposure to decontamination and cleaning processes; OR
- certified registered central service technician (CRCST).
Additional Details
Work schedule will need to align with department needs and will required to be flexible to changing department needs. Day shift hours, 5 weekdays per week, no regular weekends. Ability to perform routine duties with minimal supervision. Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required per policy.
