About the role

The University of Virginia is seeking a BAS Network Engineering Analyst for Facilities Management. Reporting to the BAS Engineering Manager, the BAS Network Engineering Analyst will be responsible for the effective operation of IT solutions dedicated to the university’s Building Automation Systems (BAS). The BAS Network Engineering Analyst will serve as the technical expert and interdepartmental liaison for development, implementation and management of the various data, applications, networks and systems serving the BAS.


The BAS Network Engineering Analyst will be principally responsible for IT/networking oversight of the university’s evolution from serial building control networks to distributed IP-based solutions. The BAS Network Engineering Analyst will also be responsible for continual evaluation and relevant implementation of emerging IT hardware, applications and systems. Integration within the university’s broader networking/systems environment will be paramount, so intimate knowledge of pertinent IT systems and network architecture is required. A firm understanding of the role of Building Automation Systems in university operations is also critical.


Additionally, the BAS Network Engineering Analyst will provide support tailored to the unique IT needs of the Automation Services department. This includes cross-platform data management and transfer, advanced application support, user interface development and server/database administration. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable working with advanced networking solutions, system integration, data management/transfer and general IT support. The BAS Network Engineering Analyst will work closely with other engineering and technical staff within FM/Automation Services to solicit feedback for best practices, ensure standardization and guarantee knowledge transfer.


The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of the university’s building automation systems (WebCTRL and Metasys) and their supporting applications, as well as a fundamental understanding of the BACnet communication protocol.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Development and implementation of distributed IP building control networks (evolution from serial to IP-based networks)

  • BAS database management and support of cross-platform integration (SQL database administration, integration with T&I/P&I/E&U for advanced customer reporting, dashboard development, etc.)

  • BAS server, application and network management (operational and resiliency enhancement of BAS IT infrastructure)

  • Dedicated IT/systems technical expert and interdepartmental liaison

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline

  • At least one year of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience related to building automation systems and/or their supporting applications (Automated Logic WebCTRL and/or Johnson Controls Metasys preferred)

  • Fundamental knowledge of the BACnet communication protocol

  • 2-3 years of experience with complex, large-scale IT (preferably in a government or regulated agency)

  • Demonstrated ability to deploy secure IP networks en masse

  • Recognized IT industry certification (such as CompTIA)

Compensation: 

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000. Actual starting salary will be dependent on applicant's education, skills, and experience.  This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
