About the role

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Senior Hyperspectral Microwave Instrument Scientist on an as-needed basis to support the development of next-generation hyperspectral microwave-based Earth-observing satellite instruments. This scientist will contribute to instrument concept development, radiative transfer modeling, retrieval system integration, and calibration/validation studies. This is not a full-time role.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Conduct simulations to inform the design of a hyperspectral microwave instrument.
  • Perform in-depth analysis of microwave radiative transfer for atmospheric sounding.
  • Compare performance of conventional microwave sounders (e.g., ATMS) versus hyperspectral systems.
  • Support radiative transfer model development, satellite radiance assimilation, and calibration of microwave sensors.
  • Analyze and process raw satellite data for instrument performance and scientific analysis.
  • Write and maintain scientific code (primarily Python) for simulation, modeling, and data analysis.
  • Generate plots, tables, and images from model and retrieval outputs; automate key workflows where possible.
  • Document code, algorithms, simulation procedures, and scientific findings.
  • Collaborate in the preparation of scientific publications, presentations, technical reports, and proposals.
  • Present results at technical conferences and project reviews.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person project meetings; document outcomes, decisions, and action items.
  • Support calibration and validation activities, including field campaign planning and analysis.
  • Maintain organized and backed-up electronic records and documentation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in microwave remote sensing, including both passive and active systems.
  • Direct experience with the Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS).
  • Expertise in microwave radiative transfer and atmospheric sounding techniques.
  • Familiarity with satellite radiance assimilation and microwave sounder instruments (e.g., ATMS).
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python required; Matlab a plus).
  • Experience with calibration techniques for microwave radiometers and sounders.
  • Strong quantitative skills, including advanced knowledge of atmospheric physics.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident able to work with export-controlled data per ITAR/EAR requirements.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with software testing, debugging, and version control.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with JPSS satellite systems, including ATMS and calibration/validation processes.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C++) or geospatial tools (e.g., Google Earth, GIS software).
  • Experience working in Linux/Unix environments and handling satellite data formats.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; have mobility; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
