Director, Software Engineer

Labcorp is hiring a Director, Interpretation Software Engineering. The Director of Interpretation Software Engineering oversees and guides a team of engineering leaders to develop a scalable clinical reporting platform and industry-leading variant interpretation services. This function plays a critical role in enabling the processing of clinical-grade NGS samples to generate accurate and reliable variant interpretations.
In this role, you will lead teams in developing innovative engineering methodologies and solving complex technical challenges. You will establish strategic plans and objectives for the function while contributing to the development of processes, techniques, and evaluation criteria for programs, leaders, and individual contributors. Your decisions will have a significant impact on the success of the function and the achievement of broader organizational goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Takes accountability and responsibility for delivering against strategic objectives in the 1-2 year horizon.
- Guides a group to deliver outcome and impact despite significant organizational, strategic, and technical ambiguity and change.
- Actively levels up engineering and non-engineering teams through organizational or people insights and initiatives.
- Anticipates and mitigates challenges for the entire engineering organization.
- Holds the managers they support accountable for the planning, oversight, and delivery of results that drive outcomes and impact.
- Works with non-engineering stakeholders to ideate, articulate, and plan long-term business strategies for a group.
- Owns and drives all aspects of talent within a group.
- Drives the most important long-term priorities that deliver customer outcomes and company impact.
- Champions a high-performance culture across the company.
Technical Delivery:
- Balances teams' operational excellence, innovation, and speed in alignment with company-wide goals.
- Deeply understands what is happening in the business and in the industry.
- Drives the long-term vision of a group using business and industry trends as an input.
- Resolves cross-team misalignments that block the ability to move forward on strategic choices.
- Understands when it is appropriate to shut down initiatives that aren't creating value and when to restructure a group's roles and goals.
- Takes action to ensure any shutdowns or restructures are done gracefully and with empathy.
Ownership and Growth:
- Actively reviews and trims the work happening across a group.
- Ensures that the work happening across a group is aligned with the company's business objectives.
- Prioritizes the group's investments appropriately.
- Elevates engineering or company-wide standards while coaching direct reports on how to do the same.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Drives transformation, generates excitement for change, and helps other leaders champion changes.
- Generates ideas, pushes the boundaries, and takes calculated risks to drive the greatest company-wide impact.
- Creates an environment that fosters innovation and helps teams take calculated risks.
- Consistently grows great managers that are able to lead teams effectively, identify talent, and manage dysfunctions on their teams.

REQUIREMENTS
- Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biology, Bioinformatics or similar background ; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years of experience. Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Experience leading software engineering teams focused on meeting Clinical and Regulatory requirements.
- 6 years of leadership experience recommended.
- Current or previous Labcorp employees preferred.
- Experience working in a regulated environment.
- Strong ability to collaborate, negotiation and priority setting.
