About the role

Overview

The Lead Medical Assistant is responsible for both clinical and administrative tasks, including, but not limited to, providing excellent and compassionate patient care when independently measuring vital signs, preparing patients for exams, effectively transitioning exam rooms between appointments, end of day terminal cleaning of exam rooms and lab, assisting with procedures, administering injections and immunizations, performing phlebotomy, specimen collection, performing diagnostic tests, instrument sterilization, updating medical history and current medication and allergies in an electronic health records system, providing patient education, and relaying information between patient and provider, inventory and supply management, and quality assurance.  Also responsible for managing correspondence, phone, record-keeping, Access Nurse reports, providing backup coverage for Patient Access Coordinators and all aspects of their clerical and customer service responsibilities, processing immunization records for all incoming students, and assisting the Insurance Specialist with insurance verifications. Their direct care accounts for 95% of the Hamre’s Center’s billable services.

This position is .90FTE with a 35 hour work week. This is an onsite position that works 9:15 AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday. 

 

About The Department:

The Laure Hamre Center for Health & Wellness is an integrated health and counseling center that offers clinical care to 2100 college students during the academic year, during regular business hours, August through May.  The Medical Assistant works as part of the Operations and Administration team, reporting to the Operations Manager.  The Medical Assistant supports the medical team of an MD, two Nurse Practitioners, one Physician Assistant, as well as fellows and residents from University of Minnesota; on an average day, the Medical Assistant is supporting two providers.  This position also runs our on site lab and performs tests and vaccinations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent and compassionate care to over 100 students a week by rooming patients, obtaining vitals & medical information, preparing room and electronic chart for providers, efficiently transitioning exam rooms between appointments, relaying information between patient and provider, and providing patient education.  Manages confidential health information.
  • Lab: Performs all lab procedures, collects and processing specimens, verifies lab results, performs diagnostic tests, phlebotomy, provides patient education, administers injections and vaccinations, maintains lab according to standards, manages information for lab vendor and electronic medical records, implements lab policies, instrument sterilization, inventory and supply management, and leads quality assurance.  Manages confidential health information.
  • Follows up on Access Nurse (phone triage) reports to offer appointments to students who have been referred to primary care follow-up. Performs other duties as part of the Operations and Administration team, including support for the Insurance Specialist during high-demand times, serves as a back-up for Patient Access Coordinators, office or clerical work.
  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned. Participates as an active member of the team. Participates in department and college activities and supports implementation of shared goals and initiatives. Provides backup support to other members of the team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinic or a lab; three to five years experience preferred.
  • Vocational/technical training as a Medical Assistant, with phlebotomy and lab technician skills.  Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Meet any certification requirements as required by the State of Minnesota; BLS/CPR certified, Certification from The American Association of Medical Assistants or other certifying body.

 

Compensation:

The hourly wage for this position will be $25.12 to $26.27 per hour depending on experience.
