SPACE SYSTEMS 

Rocket Lab’s Space Systems team is responsible for every satellite and satellite component made by Rocket Lab: from complete satellites destined for missions to the Moon and Mars, to the individual components and subsystems that make up a satellite like solar panels, flight software, reaction wheels and star trackers, separation systems, radios, and more. Our Space Systems team is made up of engineers, technicians, and designers who design, create, and put together our own satellites for missions across the commercial, government, and defense sectors, or who build and assemble satellite hardware and software that supports other satellite missions.   

SENIOR MLI ENGINEER I/II

Based out of Rocket Lab's headquarters in Long Beach, CA, the Senior MLI Engineer I/II is responsible for developing, designing, templating, and fabricating, high performance multi-layer insulation blankets. You will support the Space Systems organization, with deliverables required for internal leadership, board of directors, and investors.

(Please note: this position can be hired at the Senior MLI I or Senior MLI II level)

WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO:

• Support the Business Development team with proposals and mission concepts (scoping in MLI development into timeline)
• Develop in-house capabilities and infrastructure for manufacturing multi-layer insulation blankets
• Create high performance and space qualified multi-layer insulation blankets for use on spacecraft
• Suppot MLI fitment and installation onto test and flight hardware
• Leverage your experience with MLI to support cross-cutting activities across the Space Systems Division

QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL BRING AS SENIOR MLI ENGINEER I:

• Bachelor’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering; or other engineering discipline
• 5+ years of MLI experience including design, templating, fabricating, repairing, modifying, installing, and more
• Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes used in multi-layer insulation (MLI systems) such as sewing, cutting, patterning, etc.
• Experience with thermal testing

QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL BRING AS SENIOR MLI ENGINEER II:

• Bachelor’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering; or other engineering discipline
• 8+ years of MLI experience including design, templating, fabricating, repairing, modifying, installing, and more
• Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes used in multi-layer insulation (MLI systems) such as sewing, cutting, patterning, etc.
• Experience with thermal testing

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

• Desire to cross-train and be cross-utilized across other teams to provide surge support as required
• Experience with spacecraft or satellite design
• High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in design and analysis
• Rapid conceptual design iteration experience for MLI
• Highly self-motivated and able to work autonomously
• Willing to work in semi-clean/clean room environments for extended periods of time
• Willing to travel to support MLI installation on flight hardware

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to travel up to 25%, both domestic and international, to support spacecraft integration and test activities
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus
• Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing
