About the role

Job Description

The ideal Sr. Scrum Master will fulfill the role of Scrum Master for two teams. The Sr. Scrum Master is an experienced team-level coach who is comfortable pushing the status quo while helping to uphold Scrum. We are seeking leaders who currently serve their team as a Scrum Master who is comfortable with the complexities of a large, scaled environment.

A Sr. Scrum Master can expect to help form new teams, establishing the events and role clarity needed for initiating Scrum. They can expect to facilitate Scrum Events, foster collaboration across product lines, coach Product Owners in backlog refinement and stakeholder negotiation, and developers to maximize technical excellence.

They show initiative, empathy for the business and client stakeholders, and have a keen interest in improving their teams’ morale, productivity, and effectiveness. 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  • Proactive self-starter with strong organization skills and high degree of individual initiative and personal accountability
  • Excellent time-management and personal agility skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage, influence and inspire others to drive collaboration and alignment, working closely with team members from engineering, data science, product strategy and marketing.
  • Established background in Scrum Master of engineering or technical teams

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Coaching developers, product owner, stakeholders, leadership, organization to understand and uphold Scrum values and clarify accountabilities
  • Coaching Product Owner on variety of Backlog Refinement practices and 3-horizon planning that result in an ordered Product Backlog with a current Product Goal that aligns with Roadmap and Release Plans
  • Coaching Product Owner in their accountabilities in backlog management, how to prepare and run strong Sprint Planning, Sprint Reviews, and Release Planning
  • Coaching Developers by empowering team members to help size and sequence work and define testing scenarios and make decisions about their work
  • Coaching Tech, Quality and Engineering leads to support driving decisions down into team to increase engagement and innovation
  • Facilitating purpose-driven Scrum Events that demonstrate the empiricism of Scrum
  • Facilitating timely team decisions (but does not make them)
  • Removing impediments to the Scrum Team’s progress
  • Implementing and continually refreshing team working agreements
  • Maintaining data hygiene in team(s) workflow tool by ensuring data attributes are accurate and complete so users are confident in reports
  • Expert (or willing to become expert) in workflow tool(s) such as Jira and associated tools such as Jira Structure or Jira Align
  • Product Planning: Coaches Product Owner in product inception and product planning techniques to instill customer perspective in day-to-day work
  • Dependencies management: Facilitate active Scrum of Scrums (or similar) model to scale agile teams and mitigate dependencies across multiple teams
  • Quarterly Release Planning:  Facilitates release planning efforts including creating waterlines, scheduling, coordination, and facilitation
  • Forecasting: Coaches Scrum Teams in how to use the workflow tool to automate forecasting and reporting
  • Roadmap: Coaches Product Owner in various roadmap formats, collaborating closely with Product Management to ensure Product Strategy drives delivery efforts
  • Mentoring others: Contributes actively to the Community of Practice with
  • Scaling Agile: Solid knowledge of Agile and Lean, and traditional project management principles and practices and the ability to blend them together.

  • Community of Practice: Contributes to improving the Agile practice with job aids, templates, relevant training and learning activities
  • Conducts regular team-level Agile Health assessments that feed the team’s improvement backlog; includes Readiness assessments for new teams
  • Maintains a relevant and current action-oriented improvement backlog with SMART goals
