The Python Tools team in Developer Division owns the Python workload in Visual Studio, as well as the Python debugger used in Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code, and the Python language services used in those tools and others. We develop our tooling in Python, Typescript, C#, and (soon) Rust.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with an understanding of the Python language and the needs of Python programmers and is comfortable moving between other languages, writing code that can run in environments ranging from the desktop to the browser.

Responsibilities
- Lead initiatives to significantly enhance the functionality, runtime performance, and robustness of Microsoft's suite of Python developer tools.
- Design and implement new features for our debugger and language server tools, ensuring code is well-structured, efficient, and maintainable.
- Proactively maintain compatibility with new Python releases, ensuring our tools evolve in tandem with the language.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, troubleshoot issues, and deliver high-quality software solutions.
- Continuously monitor, identify, and address performance bottlenecks in our tools to provide a seamless development experience.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Proven track record of working on developer tools, language runtimes, compilers, or debuggers.
- Demonstrated experience in programming domains where optimization of time and memory performance.
- A data-driven and customer-focused approach to software development, with a record of meeting user needs.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
