This lab focuses on studying the impact of chronic lung disease on the blood-brain barrier using cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and patient-derived samples.
The selected
student will contribute to translational research that bridges clinical and
laboratory science by performing a variety of research activities, including
experimental setup, data collection, and documentation. This role requires
strong attention to detail, the ability to follow established protocols, and
maintaining accurate laboratory records in a fast-paced research environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with cell culture maintenance and experimental procedures
- Perform molecular and biochemical
assays, including:
Western Blot
ELISA
PCR
PBMC biomarker analysis - Handle and process human-derived biological samples in accordance with laboratory safety and compliance standards
- Follow detailed laboratory protocols with precision and consistency
- Maintain clear, accurate, and organized documentation of experiments and results
- Prepare reagents, maintain lab supplies, and support general lab operations
- Collaborate with lab members on ongoing research projects

Preferred QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM
- Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) during fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count)
- Eligible for Work Study (if applicable) and meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
- Availability to work 10–15 hours per week
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of undergraduate coursework in biology and chemistry labs
- Prior exposure to or experience in a research or technical laboratory setting
- Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., pipetting, solution preparation)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written protocols precisely
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
- Demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and sound judgment
- Students interested in pursuing medical or graduate training are strongly encouraged to apply
