About the role
The Clinical Lab Scientist II works cooperatively with all team members and performs moderate and high complexity testing per CLIA regulations.
Core Competencies
- Assists in organizing and monitoring daily workflow for the team.
- Prioritizes and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
- Performs laboratory tests according to written laboratory procedure, evaluates test results for accuracy and clinical significance. Reports test results.
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Accessions and prepares specimens according to laboratory procedure.
- Ensures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and test systems are properly functioning.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Performs Proficiency Testing investigations when assigned.

- Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Completes Lot to Lot performance verification for new reagents.
- Assists with competency assessment tasks.
- Assists in training and orientation of new employees and students.
- Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately.
- Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians or hospital personnel in other area of the hospital while maintaining good phone etiquette
- Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when appropriate.
- Demonstrates an active problem solving attitude & positive approach to all aspects of job
- Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.
Department Specific Competencies
- Dispenses blood and blood products to Nursing Personnel according to Blood Bank policies and procedures.
- Issues tissue products and derivatives to personnel according to Blood Bank policies and procedures.
- Adheres to the department’s policies and procedures for the manufacturing and labeling of blood products in compliance with FDA’s current good manufacturing practice regulations.
