Role Summary
The Managing Director Maintenance Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for Line Maintenance, On-call Maintenance, and Maintenance Control at Alaska Airlines (AS). As a leader in the Maintenance & Engineering (M&E) division, this role ensures that high standards of performance are maintained in the areas of safety, compliance, cost, and quality.
This role also serves as Alaska’s Director of Maintenance in accordance with FAA CFR Part 119 and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Maintenance departments to ensure safe maintenance operations and compliance with all company, FAA and governmental safety rules and regulations, including the airworthiness of all Company aircraft released from maintenance.
Key Duties
- Establishes strategic goals and defines the direction of the Line Maintenance department to ensure safe maintenance operations and compliance with all company policies, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and governmental safety rules and regulations including the airworthiness of all Alaska aircraft released from maintenance.
- Serves as Alaska’s Director of Maintenance in accordance with FAA CFR Part 119.
- Communicates and administers corporate policies and goals to assigned personnel to ensure a continuing understanding of Alaska Airlines commitment to safe, compliant, and robust maintenance performance.
- Ensures compliance with all governing Federal, local, and AS regulations affecting operations at assigned stations.
- Oversees short-term and long-term strategy for Line Maintenance operational requirements and ensures compliance with all governing International, Federal, local, and AS regulations affecting operations at assigned station and outstations.
- Partners with others enterprise leaders to identify and overcome obstacles to meet established goals.
- Assures the prompt requisitioning and economical use of maintenance materials, equipment, and facilities required for efficient execution of required work.
- Provides capital budget requirements to the Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering.
- Develops the quality and capability of the Maintenance department management team.
- Influence across company and provides strategic recommendations to enterprise leaders.
- Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and functions.
- Influence company culture through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
- A minimum of 10 years of aircraft maintenance experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of people leadership experience.
- Bachelor’s degree, or the willingness to attain a Bachelor’s degree within six years of start date.
- Meet requirements of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 119.65 and 119.67 including, but not limited to:
- Hold a mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant ratings
- Have 1 year of experience in a position responsible for returning airplanes to service
- Have at least 1 year of experience in a supervisory capacity under either paragraph (c)(4)(i) or (c)(4)(ii) of this section maintaining the same category and class of airplane as the certificate holder uses
- Experience managing a unionized workforce.
- Strong communication (e.g., verbal, written, presentation) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to create collaborative relationships that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company, with others in the organization, and with key external business partners.
- Demonstrated ability to influence change and initiate actions that have strategic impact and drive a high-performance culture.
- Proven change management skills and application of best practices to existing business problems.
- Ability to develop new ideas to improve safety, compliance, efficiency, and cost.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
